Publisher Team17 and developer Playtonic Games formally announced the multiplayer modes that will be featured in Yooka-Laylee.
Multiplayer will feature eight mini-games that can be played by up to four players locally. The local multiplayer games will be accessible via Rextro’s Arcade.
These mini-games include Glaciator’s brawler arena, which will be a fight to collect the most quills, and Kartos Karting, a racing-based game. Rextro’s Arcade will also feature a capture-the-flag mode called Blag the Flag and a shoot-em-up game titled Gun-let Run.
Players will be able to unlock mini-game challenges by collecting hidden coins during the game’s single-player campaign.
Playtonic Games also announced a co-op mode for the game’s campaign. While one player controls the game’s titular duo Yooka and Laylee, a second person can play as The Bee Team.
The Bee Team will be able to assist the main characters by picking up quills, collecting and storing butterflies (the game’s health & energy collectible) as well as temporarily stopping traps to help the main duo get by.
Yooka-Laylee will be available April 11 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Mac and Linux.
It is disappointing that Yooka-Laylee will not feature online multiplayer, but the showcasing of local multiplayer is a surprising treat. Being able to play with friends in so many different ways is an incredibly exciting prospect.
