X-Men Legends (XBOX)

X-Men Legends is the very first 3D Action/RPG based on the popular Marvel characters. The game lets players build the attributes and characteristics of their favorite X-Men heroes by creating, customizing and controlling teams of four mutants in real time. With gamers being able to become one of over a dozen popular characters, each with unique individual powers and skills, players lead teams of four as they battle the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and other Marvel villains on a quest to stop the extinction of mankind and determine the fate of the world.
Immersive Epic Story inspired by the “Ultimate” X-Men series and penned by former X-Men writers, X-Men Legends draws players into an original cliffhanger storyline full of plot twists and intrigue. The rich story continues through more than 35 fully rendered cinematic sequences.
Vast Selection and Customization Options as players recruit their team from more than a dozen favorite X-Men characters to embark on each new mission, as they learn and build-up special superpowers unique to each character. The action continues as gamers strengthen their team by upgrading character attributes, enhancing their fighting abilities and learning new moves. Fans can even find new equipment to increase mutant skills and unlock new characters, costumes and other hidden treasures.
Superhero Action with 4-character Real-Time Control as the action in X-Men Legends lets players not only build their team of four powerful X-Men for each mission, but also are able to switch instantly between team members as duty calls in the heat of the battle. Special moves and super powers can even be combined to increase enemy damage and gain more experience.
Multiplayer Story and Skirmish Modes allow gamers to battle the Brotherhood of Mutants and confront evil-doers alone or team up with a friend to experience the epic journey in 2-player co-operative mode, where each player controls two mutants to make a powerful X-Men squad. With Dynamic Joining, a partner can jump into the action at any time.
If there’s a downside to X-Men Legends, I would have to pin it on the graphics of the game. They aren’t the crisp, solid, and clean graphics you’d expect for a title of this magnitude. That said, they are pretty decent but nothing to impress you and your HDTV gaming buddies with. The monsters and characters are rendered adequately, and the “special effects” aren’t really any big deal. Some of the characters are also very difficult to be distinguished against the other, which didn’t impress.
The game’s sound effects were pretty standard, and the soundtrack was about the same. The best thing about the sound was the voice-talent and its implementation into the story.
The gameplay is pretty easy to pick up, and very hard to put down. You’re always wanting to try a new hero, upgrade their talents, find some hidden weapons or upgrades … all while questing through a pretty cool storyline. The game handles very well and doesn’t take long to master – so for those of you looking for a short to mid-ranged learning curve, this might be your title. The game runs through very linear missions, so there’s not a lot of “running around” aimlessly here … you go , you kick butt , and it’s on to the next mission.
ONLINE / MULTIPLAYER
No doubt that the game is really fun to play, and ridiculously addicting. Unfortunately, the game is also pretty short as the missions and gameplay seemed to completely fly by from start to finish. The good news is that there’s significant multi-player play to extend the life of the game, so it’s fun to play at parties or get-togethers.
X-Men Legends is a pretty solid title when it comes to gameplay, originality, addictiveness, and fun. I had a heck of a time getting through the missions, upgrading my heroes, and I’d always get really excited to find new things to interact and upgrade. So from the standpoint of asking, “Is this game fun?” the answer is definitely fun.
That’s not to say that Legends didn’t have its shortcomings as well. The game’s graphics are fairly mundane, the sound was unremarkable, and there’s a question to the game’s longevity since it seemed a tad short. Is this game best rented before buying? Perhaps.
Overall, X-Men Legends is a very fun, addicting, and original title for XBox/PS2 and comes recommended for a spin at the very least. If you can get over the uninspiring graphics, you can definitely enjoy some really fun gameplay and a nice new type of game for the Marvel comic universe.
