Wilfred Season 1 (DVD) Review

Wilfred Season 1

Wilfred Season 1When the FX network set out with their new slogan, “There is no box,” we’re pretty sure they were directly referring to Wilfred, their dark comedy that takes viewers to the edge and then pushes them off. This half-hour tale, starring Lord of the Rings’s Elijah Wood and Australian TV genius Jason Gann, is a quirky and crude psychological assessment of the human brain that navigates through the perils of depression and into the importance of relationships in everyday life.

The story follows Ryan (Wood), a depressed lawyer who’s had enough of his pathetic existence and is looking for a way out. After a failed suicide attempt, he hears a knock on the door to find his neighbor Jenna, played by actress Fiona Gubelmann, needing someone to watch her dog, Wilfred. Struck by her beauty and charm, Ryan agrees to watch the dog for the day, but is shocked to find out that her cute Wilfred isn’t some pooch who sits around all day wagging his tail, but a full-grown man in a dog-suit who smokes weed, drinks beer and cusses in his authentic Australian accent (Gann).

At first glance you may think that this series is already sounding bizarre and unrealistic to even consider watching, but when you dive into the psyche of Ryan’s brain, you’ll come to appreciate that his relationship with Wilfred may be his last shot in getting a second chance at life. With each episode the two bond in ways no other man has ever known. Ryan learns life lessons about himself and the world through Wilfred’s ideas and actions with every episode serving up a great message for the viewer. This is where the show’s bread and butter exists, not with Wilfred’s wild behavior, albeit downright hilarious, but with Ryan and ability to see the world for what it is and adapt himself into it so happiness can be found. And did we mention he begins to develop a crush on Jenna, Wilfred’s owner?

Hmmm, I may just be crazy after all

Bonus Features

The bonus features on the 2 disc set is a bit lacking for the most part. We would have liked to have seen some commentaries here with some of the episodes and a more behind-the-scenes look at the making of the series, but with this being a DVD release, we weren’t expecting too much. Even the Blu-ray version contains the same features. But hopefully as the series ages, a more complete Blue-ray/DVD release will be announced. The bonus features included on the discs include:

Wilfred at Comic Con 2011(Disc 1) – Watch the cast and crew behind the show at a Comic-Con panel as they talk about the show and exchange stories on the making of the series. This is an edited clip of the panel. We wish it would have shown the entire presentation.

Deleted Scenes(Disc 2) – Some funny stuff here worth a look or two.

Mary Jane Mash-Up(Disc 2) – A short, edited clip of Ryan and Wilfred smoking it up through various ways.

Wilfred & Bear: A Love Affair(Disc2) – Probably by the far the funniest thing you will ever see. No explanation as to what this bonus feature is, but I’m pretty sure you guys can guess.

FOX Movie Channel Presents Life After Film School(Disc 2) – An in-depth interview at creator and executive producer Jason Gann, who talks about the show’s origins in Australia.

Audio/Video

Nothing too surprising here. Audio features include 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound with English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles. Video quality is as expected for a DVD release. Nothing too amazing to look at, but surprising good. It features a Widescreen 1:78:1 ratio.

Entertainment

While the DVD release of Season 1 isn’t up to par, feature-wise, compared to other TV show releases in the market, die-hard fans of the show will want to gobble this up for their collection as its 13 episodes included on the disc offer a unique, funny and fresh take on the depression tale. The episodes move quick with smart writing, excellent directing and enough funny moments that will make you want to tell your friends about it. With the addition of the human element to the storytelling, Wilfred manages to deliver the goods and keep you entertained for as long as you want it to, uh, as long as you don’t take it too seriously and bark too loud.
