Wii U News Unveiled During Nintendo Direct

/ Dec 19th, 2013 No Comments

Hyrule Warriors

Nintendo released a new Nintendo Direct for December detailing some newer Wii U titles while revealing more information on previously announced games for 2014.

The biggest news from the Wii U side of the Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Hyrule Warriors (name not final). Tecmo Koei and Nintendo are partnering up to produce a new game in Tecmo Koei’s Warriors franchise set in The Legend of Zelda universe. Gameplay footage shown pits Link against hordes of enemies from the Zelda series in typical Warriors style. The new title is separate from the new installment in the Zelda series for Wii U from producer Eiji Aonuma, which was previously announced at an earlier Nintendo Direct. Hyrule Warriors launches sometime in 2014 for the Wii U.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS

Rosalina & Luna are more terrifying than Tom Nook.

A new video teased details about the upcoming Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Joining the ever-expanding cast of Super Smash Bros. are Rosalina & Luna from the Super Mario Galaxy games. Rosalina & Luna is the fourth newcomer revealed for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS along with Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer and the Villager. The pair fights together in battle with a fighting style reminiscent of the Ice Climbers from Melee and Brawl. No information on a release date for the game was disclosed during the Nintendo Direct.

Mario Kart 8

It is like that one plane level.

Not only will Rosalina join the new Super Smash Bros., but she will be a playable character in Mario Kart 8 as well. Along with Rosalina, the video revealed baby characters as playable racers. The game features new courses set in an airport, a desert and in the clouds. Mario Kart 8 for Wii U releases sometime in Spring 2014.

Dr. Luigi

I DO IT!

Other Wii U news came in the form of more information on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, eShop titles and DLC for Sonic Lost World. At VGX, Nintendo showed off the fourth character for Tropical Freeze in Cranky Kong. Cranky can utilize his cane to pogo over spikes and take out enemies that Donkey, Diddy and Dixie cannot. Additionally, when two characters collect 100 bananas a powerful combo move called the Kong POW can be used to take out all on-screen enemies. Wii U owners of Sonic Lost World will enjoy two new Nintendo-themed DLC levels for free. A level themed after Yoshi’s Island is available now for free on the Wii U eShop. Another level themed after The Legend of Zelda will be forthcoming.

Sonic Lost World

Sonic and Yoshis straight chilling.

Nintendo’s Wii Sports Club will offer another title for rental/purchase. Joining Tennis and Bowling is Golf for Wii Sports Club. In 2014, Baseball and Bowling will be offered in Wii Sports Club’s line-up. Another eShop title available right now is NES Remix. NES Remix offers remixed moments from the Nintendo Entertainment System featuring 16 different games from Super Mario Bros. to Donkey Kong to Excitebike. These moments will feature the original experience and re-imaginations of those moments with brand new elements. The last Wii U eShop news is Dr. Luigi coming as a downloadable exclusive at the end of the year. Dr. Luigi features a similar play style to Dr. Mario where players match up similarly colored pills to eliminate viruses except Dr. Luigi uses L-shaped pills to match up colors. The game features a Dr. Mario mode, GamePad compatibility, online play and Germ Buster mode featured in the Brain Training series. Dr. Luigi will be available on the Wii U eShop on Dec 31.
