Compulsion Games announced its procedurally-generated dystopian game We Happy Few is releasing on April 13, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC with Mac and Linux dates expected around the same time.
The studio also announced its scope is expanding to bring the game to retail stores with the help of Gearbox Publishing. The game will retail for $60 but is available for 15 percent off until launch at a price of $50.99.
Gearbox Publishing was chosen by Compulsion Games because the developer wanted to build on the promise of the We Happy Few demo on Microsoft’s stage at E3 2016. What originally started life as a roguelike game with light story elements, became something larger for the team. Rather than not living up to expectations and keeping the game small, Compulsion decided to make the game bigger by rewriting the stories of the main three characters and improving the overall quality of the encounters and world.
We Happy Few originally released as an early access title on July 26, 2016. It was made available through Steam, GOG, and Xbox’s Game Preview program. Compulsion is justifying the price increase from $30 to $60 by noting increased development costs and as the best way to make up development costs, marketing campaigns, and going to retail. DLC will also appear in the game post release.
Kickstarter and Early Access backers will receive the standard edition of the game without paying anything extra. Along with a bonus weapon, Kickstarter backers will get the season pass for free and a free digital copy of the game.
Compulsion also showed off the Life in Technicolor update. This serves as the last major update for Early Access. It includes overhauls to AI, the user interface, Joy mechanics, and fast travel.
