Torchlight II

Torchlight II

Torchlight II is a PC game that has been in development for a lengthy period of time. The sequel to the hit 2009 action RPG Torchlight has so far only been shown in previews, screenshots and videos since it was announced it was in development. Until just recently no release date has been given. Runic Games, the game’s developer, has finally broken the silence and has posted an official announcement on their site regarding the release date.

“We’ll get right to it,” the announcement said. “We have some news for you: We will announce our release date [for Torchlight II on Friday, August 31."

The announcement goes on to say that the release date will be given at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington. The popular gaming expo will run from August 31 to September 2. The announcement of the release date will coincide with the very first day of the expo. In addition to officially announcing a release date, representatives from Runic Games will show off the game to the public.

Torchlight II is an RPG taking a page from the groundbreaking 1996 game Diablo and its sequels. The games places a great emphasis on dungeon crawling, strategy and combating multiple enemies at once. It is developed by Runic Games, a development company founded in 2008 by Travis Baldree. Baldree was also credited with making the  2005 game Fate.

The company was co-created with Max and Erich Schaefer, both of whom founded Blizzard North, the development studio responsible for the creation of the first two games of the dark RPG series Diablo. The company released their first game, Torchlight, a Diablo like RPG, in 2009 to great reception.

Runic Games appears very keen to capitalize on replicating this success with Torchlight II.  Some have gone on to say that it may even be better that Diablo III, which has received mediocre reception and ire from Diablo fans for straying from its roots.

Open betas for the game closed in May. Many beta testers involved gave the build they played very positive feedback. To say the least, this game looks very promising and permeates with a great ambition to be successful. Who knows, it really might just turn out the be the Diablo III killer it’s expected to be. We’ll not know until it is released.

Until such time you can find out more information about Torchlight II at its official website.
