Uncharted 4: A Thief's End Review

With every new year comes a sense of renewed purpose and determination. Most people view the new year as a chance to look ahead and set new goals for themselves.

When it comes to video games, it’s easy to be excited for what’s ahead in 2017. Nintendo will soon unveil details about its new console, the Switch, and Microsoft’s super-powered new Xbox, Project Scorpio, is expected to launch at the end of the year. And, of course, there’s games like Red Dead Redemption 2 to look forward to.

However, before we completely turn the page on 2016, let’s look back at some of the top scoring games on Gaming Illustrated from the past year. Remember, these games are on the list based on their review score, which is only the opinion of the particular writer who reviewed the game.

Uncharted 4 – 100% – Nathan Drake’s saga ends on a high note. In his review, Ben Sheene said “Years of effort have paid off in a game that may not be ‘perfect’ but is impeccably brilliant in virtually every way.”

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine – 98% – This final expansion to The Witcher 3 is so great and expansive that’s in a category all on its own.

Abzu Review – 96% – If you still think “are games art?” is an argument, you should play Abzu. The game presets the vast ocean with beautiful visuals and an exciting narrative.

Inside Review – 95% – Inside is gorgeous, clever and unique. In his review, Kalvin Martinez said “Inside is tautly wound with every moment leaving you with a sense of dread.”

The Witness Review – 95% – The Witness requires players to overcome difficult challenges, but the fact that it trusts them to do so is part of what makes it so great. The atmosphere and sense of aloneness creates a very Zen experience.

Dark Souls 3 Review – 95% – Dark Souls games can be extremely difficult, but as Michael Mays said in his review, “…if you avoid playing Dark Souls 3 because you are trying to avoid a frustrating experience, you are also missing out on one of finest gaming experiences this generation has to offer.”

Ratchet and Clank Review – 95% – The dynamic duo of Ratchet and Clank came back in rebooted fashion. Adding a fresh coat of paint and some modern weapons made this tandem as fun as ever.

MLB The Show 16 Review – 93% – 2016’s best sports game may have been MLB The Show 16, which was more realistic than ever. As Chad Whitney said in his review of the baseball title, “San Diego Studios knocked this one out of the park.”

While the games above were the top scoring games on Gaming Illustrated in 2016, there were a few others that received a review score of at least 90 percent. Here are the rest of the games that earned that rating in 2016.
