The Tony Hawk video game franchise is being revived. Publisher Activision and UK developer Big Bit are bringing Tony Hawk’s Shred Session to iOS and Android devices this summer, Activision announced.
Like previous Tony Hawk games, players will be able to pass levels and unlock new tricks and gear. Shred Session will feature real-life locations reimagined as a skate park, including Santa Monica and London.
Following the mold of successful mobile games, Shred Session will be an endless runner–skaters will continue down a linear path until they fail to ditch an obstacle. Along the way, players will perform tricks using swipe gestures on their mobile device.
The game will feature six pro skaters as playable characters, including Tony Hawk and his son Riley, Chris Cole, Aaron “Jaws” Homoki, Lizzie Armanto and David Gonzalez.
A new incarnation of Tony Hawk’s skateboarding franchise is always a welcome addition, especially one that somewhat resembles the original Pro Skater formula. The magic of the original Tony Hawk games might not be captured ever again but mobile platforms might represent the best chance.
