Crystal Dynamics Global Brand Director Karl Stewart and the Official Xbox Magazine confirmed via Twitter the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot will have a multiplayer element.
The announcement confirms speculation that began when a retail listing for next year’s Tomb Raider described potential online capabilities. The leak from UK retailer GAME promised “a variety of multiplayer modes as Lara’s Shipmates or Yamatai’s Scavengers.” It has since been removed but that has not stopped multiplayer rumors from buzzing the internet.
TombRaider multiplayer,” the tweet from the Official Xbox Magazine read. The tweet also shared a link with more details on the February issue. Stewart shared the link and confirmed the news via his Twitter account.
No details on multiplayer for Tomb Raider were given. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which released in 2010, included co-op play. It was the first game starring Lara Croft to have multiplayer capabilities. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available to play free of charge via the Square Enix game streaming service Core Online.
Further details on multiplayer are set to be revealed in the February issue of the Official Xbox Magazine. Tomb Raider will be featured on the cover of the issue, and the featured story is expected to be all about multiplayer. Subscribers will begin receiving the issue as early as Saturday while it will be available on newsstands on Jan. 8.
The third-person action title tells the never-before-heard origin story of a young Lara Croft. She is shipwrecked and left for dead on an island full of pirates. It is a much more dark, gritty Lara Croft than fans are used to seeing.
