The Swords of Ditto Preview: To Worsen The World

/ Oct 2nd, 2017 No Comments

The Swords of Ditto

The Swords of Ditto is a top-down action RPG that follows a playable character who must rid the land of evil. Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

The plot has been done in video games time and again, but developer onebitbeyond made The Swords of Ditto unique beyond its narrative. I was able to get some hands-on time with the game at PAX West 2017, and I experienced a fresh take on a familiar genre.

100 Years of Evil

According to the legend of “The Swords of Ditto,” a hero comes along every 100 years to expel evil from the land. As you may have guessed, players take control of this hero. However, the twist on the genre is that you are not just one of these heroes. You will play as all of them.

With each death, you will take on the role of a new hero 100 years later. How you performed in your previous character’s life will impact the world you face as your new character. If you fail to accomplish much in your time as one character, your new character will face a dark, disheartened world.

Additionally, you may be able to discover some of your previous character’s gear and armor as your new character, and you will hear the tales of your characters’ conquests hundreds of years later.

This creates a unique aesthetic. Players create their own world that changes based on their actions.

Each new character will first discover their fate as the Sword of Ditto, which is followed by a confrontation with the antagonist, Mormo. Mormo reveals an evil plan and taunts players. From there, players can take on Mormo immediately or play the long game and explore the secrets of the world.

Killing Mormo’s followers and destroying special artifacts will weaken its power, and doing so will have an impact on the world around you that becomes more evident with each reincarnation.

Your World, Their Dungeons

The gameplay is typical RPG fare. Players travel throughout a vibrant, colorful world, fighting monsters and collecting loot along the way. The game takes obvious inspirations from classic action RPGs.

However, dungeons are procedurally generated. This means you’ll never know what to expect. There could be enemies lurking around every corner and new puzzles to solve before boss fights.

Another unique aspect of the game is the variety of weapons and abilities you can earn. The Swords of Ditto uses a sticker system, which allows players to find and craft items that can be used to improve their character’s capabilities. Players will have to test fighting techniques and strategies to best boss fights and solve puzzles.

The Swords of Ditto

Sometimes you find a treasure room. Sometimes you get seduced by an octopus.

Strategy becomes more complicated when you are playing co-op.

During my preview of the game, a developer jumped into The Swords of Ditto with me. Co-op brings a new layer into the game. Some puzzles are easier to solve and bosses can be defeated quicker if players work together to find the right combinations of skills and abilities. Players are even able to pick up other player characters and toss them as weapons.

This brought back memories of old school action RPGs and arcade beat ’em ups. This is clearly a game inspired by the past.

Certainly No Copy

The Swords of Ditto manages to feel both familiar and fresh. The preview build I played surprised me with its unique concepts and smooth gameplay.

I can’t wait to dive into the adventure again once the full version is released for PlayStation 4 and PC in early 2018.
