The Evil Within is being directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of the long-running Resident Evil franchise. Mikami helped develop several titles during his 20-year career in the games industry, including Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry and Vanquish.
Bethesda’s involvement in the game began when the company acquired Mikami’s Japan-based Tango Gameworks studio. The Evil Within was originally announced last year as Project Zwei.
Bethesda is known for popular game franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Doom. The Evil Within will mark the publisher’s first foray into the survival horror genre.
Earlier this week, Bethesda announced development on the 2011 role-playing game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has ended. The development team will still provide minor updates to the game as needed but there will be no future bonus content for the game. Bethesda said the company will focus development on their next title, which could be Fallout 4.
