Telltale Games and HBO Global Licensing formally announced their partnership to produce a game based on Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series aims to launch digitally sometime in 2014.
While the announcement originally came out of VGX on Dec. 8, the two companies formally announced their partnership in creating an interactive episodic gamer series based on the Emmy Award-winning fantasy epic, Game of Thrones, on Dec. 9. The licensing partnership is a multi-year, multi-title deal. That means the tentative 2014 launch for the first batch of episodes is likely just the first of several seasons of content based on the license. Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series will hit home consoles, PC/Mac and mobile devices some time next year. No specific platforms are currently announced, but the specific platform announcement should be forthcoming.
The games are going to be based around the television adaptation of Game of Thrones which is based on the fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. Telltale Games’ series will tell stories based in Westeros focusing on new and established characters. There is currently no word on what if any involvement George R.R. Martin will have in the Telltale adaptation.

Quick Take
While rumors brewed for weeks before the official announcement, getting the official word on Telltale’s Game of Thrones adaptation at VGX was still extremely exciting. Despite formally announcing the game, there still remains many questions about Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series. As an adaptation of the television series, it will be interesting to see how much freedom they have to tell meaningful stories within George R.R. Martin’s overall vision of the Westerosi saga. Another question mark is how much of a role the fan favorites will play in the series. If the Game of Thrones adaptation from last year taught us anything, even if players are not controlling Ned or Tyrion, there need to be firm ties to the larger world of Westeros for a video game adaptation to work. Luckily, Telltale’s style of game is better suited to capitalize on what makes Game of Thrones so compelling, which is sharply written dialogue and deep story lines. Even though there are a wealth of questions that still need to be answered about the game, this may be the one adaptation to do Westeros justice.
