Tearaway Unfolded

Media Molecule announced it is bringing the world of Tearaway to the PlayStation 4 with Tearaway Unfolded.

Tearaway Unfolded is not a straight port of the Vita version. It is an enhanced port featuring an expanded take on atoi’s adventure. The game will run in 1080p and target 60 fps.

The developer immediately recognized the difficulty of porting Tearaway to the PS4. So Media Molecule held a game jam to figure out how to bring Tearaway to Sony’s latest console while retaining the spirit of the Vita version.

[adsense250itp]Unfolded is rebuilt entirely to utilize the unique features of the DualShock 4, similar to how Tearaway took advantage of the Vita’s features. The PS4 version of Tearaway is adapted for a couch and controller experience.

Players will use the touch pad to unleash gusts of wind to unfold bridges or push enemies off cliffs. Wind will also be used to help atoi fly through the sky on her brand new paper plane. The light bar can be used to light up dark places, grow and transform scenery and guide atoi on her journey.

Atoi can also throw items and creatures out of the TV and into the controller. Players can hear the item rattling in the controller before shooting them back into the game.

Quick Take

Tearaway was one of the more surprising handheld games of 2013. It occupied a big part of our hearts here at Gaming Illustrated. Seeing Media Molecule bring the spirit of the Vita adventure to the big screen with Tearaway Unfolded is incredible. The charm and whimsy of the world was too great to be limited to a single outing. It is encouraging to see Media Molecule making smart changes to adapt the game for the PS4. Plus, being on the PS4 allows more people to enjoy the magic Tearaway has to offer.
