Syberia III Announced

Syberia II

Syberia II is finally getting a sequel.

French game publisher Anuman Interactive has officially announced that development has begun on the third game in the critically acclaimed Syberia adventure game series. No specific release date has been given at this time but it is expected that Syberia III will be released in either 2014 or 2015 on multiple platforms.

It’s been eight years since the release of the last game, Syberia II. Developed and published in 2004 by French game developer Microids, the sequel continued the story begun in the first Syberia that introduced players to fictional American lawyer Kate Walker. Walker was on a long search to find a recluse toy maker obsessed with finding the last surviving woolly mammoths on Earth. Syberia II continued the adventures of Kate, who accompanied him in his search for the famous prehistoric creatures. Sadly, Kate’s adventure came to something of a cliffhanger.

Plans for a sequel were made immediately after the game’s release but a number of issues prevented this from happening. The game’s lead designer and writer, Benoit Sokal, left Microids to form his own game development company, White Birds Productions. No development on the sequel occured until after Microids was purchased by Anuman Interactive in 2010. Anuman announced in April 2010 that they intended to create a sequel and is only now that they have followed up on this promise.

Benoit Sokal, whose company is no longer in operation, will be returning to pen the third game’s story and serve, once more, as its lead designer. Also leading the project will be Elliot Grassiano, the original founder of Microids. Elliot will be serving as vice president of the newly formed Microids development unit for Anuman and will oversee development on projects made by the division.

“I’m very pleased to be creating another Kate Walker adventure and working with Anuman Interactive’s teams on the project,” says Benoit Sokal on his involvement in the project. “I created the first two episodes of Syberia with Elliot, so I’m also really happy to be able to create this new one with him and illustrate the evolution of Anuman as a significant player in the adventure games industry.”
