SteelSeries announced the Stratus XL, a larger form factor Bluetooth controller designed for use with all iOS devices. As the number of controller-compatible games grows, so does the demand for more precise and tactile controls that touch devices inherently lack.
The Stratus XL features a larger form factor similar to that found with home console controllers, four pressure-sensitive action buttons, a pressure sensitive directional pad, dual analog sticks, two pressure sensitive shoulder buttons, two analog shoulder triggers and a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button.
LED indication lights in the center of the controller allow for up to four controllers to be assigned to the same device for iOS multiplayer sessions and easy identification. An on/off switch can be used to save battery life with an estimated 40 hours of gameplay from two AA batteries. A battery life indicator is located on the bottom of the controller.
The SteelSeries Stratus XL is due for release later this year and will be available from the SteelSeries website as well as other retailers.
We had an opportunity to talk with SteelSeries about the Stratus XL and the philosophy behind the design. Taking a well-designed form factor and adding pressure sensitive buttons and a 40-hour battery life on replaceable batteries makes it easy to game on the go. It also helps with not having to wait long recharge times when the batteries do give out.
