Sony Shows PlayStation Evolution While Teasing PS4

/ Feb 18th, 2013 No Comments

PS4

Over the weekend, Sony began releasing mini documentaries detailing the history of the PlayStation brand while giving fuel to the idea that a PS4 reveal is coming Wednesday. Weeks ago, Sony began teasing the industry by announcing an event where they would be discussing the future of the PlayStation brand. The event, which is scheduled for this Wednesday (Feb. 20) in New York City, is expected to be Sony’s forum for publicly revealing the next generation PlayStation.

Though nothing outside of the announcement video has been shown by Sony, it hasn’t stopped rampant speculation and a flood of rumors and information leaks from coming forward. Despite what seems obvious, the company is remaining tight-lipped but the recent video series makes a Wednesday PS4 reveal seem quite practical. The first video was titled “Evolution of PlayStation: The Beginning” and was released on Friday (Feb. 15). The video details Sony’s first foray into video games during the early and mid ’90s with their gaming division, Sony Computer Entertainment, and the original PlayStation. On Saturday, the next video in the series looked back on the massively successful PlayStation 2 (PS2) and how the console made breakthroughs in technology, gaming, and sales. Yesterday, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) was given the spotlight and focused on how Sony made the transition into HD gaming and products like the PlayStation Move.

With only two days left until the supposed PS4 event, it’s safe to assume that Sony will release two more videos for the “Evolution of PlayStation” series. The PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) were the handheld extensions of the PlayStation brand and will more than likely fill up the final two days of video content before the event in New York City. The PSP still has a strong market in Japan with many developers releasing games for it. The PS Vita has been off to a slow start in its first year but many are expecting Sony to announce games and a possible price drop on Wednesday.

So far, Sony has done an excellent job of building up hype for their upcoming event and the PS4. By releasing these videos they are reminding gamers of the strength of the PlayStation brand and cashing in on the big nostalgia factor. It should be noted that the “Evolution of PlayStation” videos are all gathered in the “#PlayStation2013″ playlist on the YouTube channel. The first video in the playlist is the original video that announced the Feb. 20 event.

Will the world finally catch a glimpse at the long awaited PS4? Will system specs, controllers, games or even price be revealed? Only time will tell but the wait is almost over.
