Sega announced release dates for both Sonic Boom games. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric launches on Wii U this Nov. 18. Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal hits 3DS on Nov. 11.
Both games are part of the Sonic Boom initiative from Sega. It is a new Sonic experience aiming to introduce new action-adventure gameplay, characters, environments and storylines. These elements will follow through the Wii U and 3DS games into the franchise’s first CG-animated television series.
Big Red Button is developing Rise of Lyric for the Wii U. The game follows Sonic and his team in their attempt to prevent new villain Lyric from raising a robot army and taking over the world.
Sanzaru Games is developing Shattered Crystal for the 3DS. In Shattered Crystal, Lyric kidnaps Amy forcing Sonic and his pals to rescue her from the clutches of the villain.
The pair of games comprise the final part of the exclusive Sonic agreement between Nintendo and Sega. They also serve as prequels to the Sonic Boom television series premiering in fall 2014.

Quick Take
Despite criticism about the artistic direction of the whole Sonic Boom sub-series, both games look solid. The gameplay from Rise of Lyric is interesting and hopefully the reinvention of the Sonic formula works out. Sanzaru’s more classic take on the series in Shattered Crystal is promising. The developer made Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time last year, which turned out to be a faithful entry into the series. While the athletic tape is gratuitous and the Nathan Drake infinity scarf for Sonic is an odd choice, the Sonic Boom games have some potential.
