Shenmue 3‘s Kickstarter campaign ended Friday netting a total of $6,333,295. The success guarantees the game will enter development by Ys Net for the PC and PlayStation 4.
Enough money was earned to break a number of Kickstarter funding records. Shenmue 3 is now the highest rated game backed on Kickstarter, a record previously held by the upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It currently ranks as the eighth most highest earning Kickstarter campaign of all time.
Despite these successes, Shenmue 3 did not reach $11 million as expected. The amount was required to reach all of the visible stretch goals to develop the game completely. Funding on Kickstarter reached just enough to get to the $6 million goal, enabling more advanced features to be added to the game’s battle system.
This financial shortfall was addressed during the Kickstarter’s countdown video broadcast on Twitch. Lead producer Yu Suzuki announced further donations to the project will soon be taken through PayPal.
Shenmue 3 is currently slated for a release in December 2017.

The success of Shenmue’s Kickstarter and the records it has set undoubtedly proves fans still have great faith in the franchise. Their zeal has ended a 14 year-long hiatus. In allowing further money to be donated to Shenmue 3’s development, the third part of Ryo Hazuki’s journey definitely looks to be seeing a very bright tomorrow.
