Sega 3D Classics Collection Announced

/ Jan 21st, 2016 No Comments

Sonic

Sega announced the Sega 3D Classics Collection will release on April 26 for the Nintendo 3DS.

The collection will be available on the Nintendo eShop and as a physical release for $29.99. It contains nine classic Sega games previously released on the Master System and Genesis consoles, including four games never released on the 3DS before.

Power Drift and Puyo Puyo 2 are the two games in the collection that have never been released outside of Japan. Power Drift is a sprite-based circuit racer where players race against AI opponents. Puyo Puyo 2 is a head-to-head competitive puzzle game where players can compete against the AI or in local multiplayer.

Maze Walker and Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa are Master System rarities and have never been released on the 3DS. Maze Walker was originally a game designed for the SegaScope 3-D glasses. The 3DS is able to reproduce the effects of the glasses as players attempt to escape a mysterious and dangerous maze. Fantasy Zone II is a scrolling shooter and is the original Master System version. Fantasy Zone II W is also included in the collection which is the version of Fantasy Zone II that was upgraded to match the graphics of the System-16 arcade board.

It wouldn’t be a Sega collection without Sonic and the original Sonic the Hedgehog will headline the 3D Classics Collection. Thunder Blade brings helicopter action along with stereoscopic 3D visuals and new features. Galaxy Force II is a 3D shoot ’em up where players are a pilot for the Space Federation. The 3DS version will include a doubled resolution with upgraded graphics. Altered Beast rounds out the package. Players will fight off demons and monsters by transforming into different beasts with included local co-op multiplayer.

Quick Take

Though a few of the games in the Sega 3D Classics Collection are already available on the eShop, this bundle of games and rarities is a nice nostalgic touch. Players will be able to relive Sega classics that they would have never believed to have appeared on a Nintendo console when they were first released. The popularity of the eShop and retro gaming for Nintendo owners will likely inspire similar trips down memory lane in the future.
