During Comic-Con in San Diego, Sam Raimi was revealed as a producer behind the upcoming film adaptation of The Last of Us.
Screen Gems, the studio behind the Resident Evil films, is adapting the game which will be produced under Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures company. The screenplay is being written by Neil Druckmann who served as Creative Director for the game. Druckmann, Game Director Bruce Straley and Naughty Dog Co-Presidents Evan Wells and Chris Balestra will also be producing the film.
Raimi is well known for his job as director of the original Evil Dead films and the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Details behind a release date or a director have not been announced but Raimi wants to remain faithful to the game. It was revealed that Maisie William, who plays Arya Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, met with Druckmann and Raimi about playing the role of Ellie.
The Last of Us was released in June of 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and received universal acclaim from critics. A PlayStation 4 version of the game titled The Last of Us Remastered is available today.
Naughty Dog has been known for their mastery of translating a film-like experience into videogames. One can only hope that with the Uncharted film and The Last of Us, nothing will be lost in translation. The Last of Us has proven to be one of the industry’s definitive masterpieces and a film adaptation might bring an entire new audience into the medium.
