[adsense250itp]Saints Row 4 is the highly anticipated action-adventure game and possibly the grand finale of the Saints Row series. The future of the franchise became uncertain when THQ sold off all of their assets. However, it was picked up by Deep Silver. This sequel is very similar in both graphics and gameplay to its predecessor: Saints Row 3. Deep Silver and Volition have released a couple of Saints Row 4 trailers that show two very different marketing strategies.
One of Saints Row 4 trailers, “E3 2013 War on Humanity Trailer”, is cinematic in style and displays the dramatic story. The opening scene shows the President of the United States shaking hands with a guy then realizing there is something terribly wrong. The Saints Row 4 trailer evokes emotion with dramatic music and presentation. It goes on to introduce the characters in the game that are all very familiar to the Saints Row franchise. However, they introduce a new character, Keith David, as “Keith David” and the main alien enemy, Zinyak. As they are introducing the characters one by one, viewers get a feeling of just how dire the situation is on the planet. This particular Saints Row 4 trailer also shows a glimmer of the humor that is in the game, but for the most part, it is melodramatic and intense as it plays out.
Another of the Saints Row 4 trailers entitled, “Independence Day”, again opens with dramatic music and the urgency to free America and the planet from the aliens. It begins with an intense and emotional speech from the Vice President, Keith David. The trailer is very similar to the film “Independence Day”. Of the two Saints Row 4 trailers, this shows all the action and explosions, as well as the energetic pace of the game. It emphasizes the mayhem and madness the aliens are causing and all that humanity has built being destroyed around them. The President is in a Matrix-style simulation trying to break free of it, so that he can rejoin his friends to fight the alien takeover. In the false reality, he is given awesome and over the top weapons and superpowers, which is what Saints Row is about.
The major marketing strategies brought out in each of the Saints Row 4 trailers are the intensity and farcical emotion of the storyline. Patriotism is key to Saints Row 4 and highlighted in the “Independence Day” trailer, by the customization of the costumes shown in this trailer with the Uncle Sam costume and his weapon called the “Merican”. Both trailers give a good indication of the humor and the drama of the game, the new weapons, including the usual rocket launchers, machine guns, and pistols. The superpowers are a definite draw to the player who loves action, but it also appeals to the player who likes a storyline with humor. This game will appeal to the fans of the delightfully over-the-top action film “Independence Day”, and definitely to the fans of the Saints Row franchise. Saints Row 4 is due to be released on August 20, 2013. For anyone who has not checked out Gaming Illustrated’s fully ‘Murican Preview of the Saints Row 4 PC version, check it out here.
