Ridge Racer Driftopia will release this year as a free-to-play title for PlayStation 3 and PC, Namco Bandai Games announced.
Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, Ridge Racer Driftopia will be a “free-2-drift” title complete with microtransactions. Players will be able to purchase additional vehicles, repair kits to fix cars already owned and XP packs.
Bugbear Entertainment previously worked on the 2012 game Ridge Racer Unbounded.
[adsense250itp]“Free-to-play is playing an increasingly important role, so it’s very exciting to be bringing one of our most successful franchises to the free-to-play space for everyone to enjoy,” senior vice president of Namco Bandai Games Europe Olivier Comte said in a press release.
No firm release date for Ridge Racer Driftopia was given but the game is expected to launch sometime this year.
Along with the announcement of the game, Namco Bandai Games released a trailer showcasing gameplay from Ridge Racer Driftopia. The trailer shows off some of the game’s free features as well highlighting some of the access players must purchase separately.
Prior to the release of Ridge Racer Unbounded, Bugbear launched the PlayStation Vita-exclusive game Ridge Racer Vita. The game used a model in which cars and courses were sold as DLC in addition to the price of the game.
