Ratchet & Clank are coming to theaters in an animated film, Insomniac Games community lead James Stevenson announced on the PlayStation Blog.

Blockade Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment are working closely with Insomniac to develop the CGI-animated film. Rainmaker released their first theatrical film, Escape from Planet Earth, in February.

The movie is expected to hit theaters in 2015.

Insomniac is playing a hands-on role in all aspects of the Ratchet & Clank film production. Writer T.J. Fixman is in charge of writing the script. Fixman wrote the more recent titles in the franchise, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault.

Jericca Cleland will direct the film. Voice actors James A. Taylor, David Kaye and Jim Ward will bring their talents from the game to the big screen as the voice of Ratchet, Clank and Captain Qwark respectively.

The movie will tell the story of two unlikely heroes trying to stop an evil alien from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet and Clank will meet a team of heroes called The Galactic Rangers as they learn lessons of friendship and discovering one’s own identity.

Ratchet and Clank were first introduced to the world when the game was released on PlayStation 2 in 2002. The Sony-exclusive franchise went on to have 12 original games and spin-offs.

Sony and Insomniac hope the film will help bring the 10-year-old Ratchet and Clank characters to a whole new audience.

Blockade is also bringing another Sony property to life on film. The 2007 title Heavenly Sword is being developed as a straight-to-home video release.

A teaser trailer for the film was posted on the PlayStation Blog. The trailer can be viewed below.
