At the posh South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif., the Sony Store rolled out a PlayStation 4 display featuring not one, not two, but three playable PS4 units. The display is the first known of its kind to be erected in California and perhaps in the United States. Naturally, it’s safe to assume that other Sony Stores at high-end locations in other states should be receiving displays soon. Gaming Illustrated ventured over to South Coast Plaza and into the Sony Store in the afternoon on Thursday to see if the rumors of a PS4 display were true. Not only was there a playable PS4 there, our team found out there was in fact three.
The interesting aspect of all the pictures we snapped off while visiting the store is the lack of a crowd. Apparently, nobody knows that the display is up and fully interactive, or nobody cares. Chances are the former is more accurate than the latter, so gamers in the Los Angeles or Orange County, areas might want to head over to the swanky mall to checkout the next generation of gaming.
The main display has the PS4 branding on the wall and two large 1080p televisions mounted, along with PS Vitas to the side. The signage sports the “Greatness Awaits” marketing message that Sony has been touting in commercials leading up to the release.
It’s clear that Sony has taken the home theater approach with this display. In the picture the PS4 sits centralized to a large screen, attached to a home theater surround sound system.
There were plenty of new controllers on display, all plugged in and ready to go. For those gamers that haven’t tried out the new DualShock 4 controllers, they are similar to the PS3 models, but have a slightly different design in the handles and now feature a touch-pad that will undoubtedly add to the interactive experience within various games. It was previously reported that there would be color variations for the controller available at launch.
Again, in the early afternoon on a Thursday, the Sony Store was eerily quiet and all but one of the three PlayStation 4 units were untouched. All units were readily available to be touched, held, beloved or mocked. Chances are as the holiday shopping season gets closer and news about the PS4 being playable at an actual store gets around, gamers won’t have quite the same level of access as they can right now.
Back on Aug. 20 at Gamescom, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 Release Date would be Nov. 15, 2013. By all accounts, pre-orders for the PS4 have heavily outweighed those for their chief competitor, the Microsoft Xbox One. Release date games are to include FIFA 14, Madden 25, NBA 2K14, Assassin’s Creed IV and Battlefield 4. In addition, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Knack, Need for Speed: Rivals, Skylanders Swap Force and Tiny Brains will be available when the “Gen4″ system is released.
