PS Plus Free Games for January

Sony announced what games will be available for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita owners starting in January 2016 as a part of the free games for PlayStation Plus.
PS4 owners will be able to download Hardware: Rivals and Grim Fandango Remastered. Hardware: Rivals is making its debut through PlayStation Plus, allowing players to get behind the wheel of a tank or attack jeep for some vehicle combat. While it sounds similar to Twisted Metal, the game is inspired by the PS2 game Hardware: Online Arena. Players can go online to play against friends or others while competing across various maps and modes. Grim Fandango Remastered is an updated version of Tim Schafer’s classic PC adventure game. Manny Calavera is a travel agent for the Department of Death and it’s players’ job to help him guide souls to their final resting place. The game is packed with Mexican folklore, complex puzzles, humorous dialog, and updated graphics.
Dragon Age: Origins is the highlight for PS3 owners this month. The first entry in Bioware’s acclaimed franchise is an epic fantasy tale that shows off the developer’s knack for storytelling and RPG gameplay. Players will also be able to check out Medal of Honor Warfighter. Though highly anticipated before its release in 2012, the game became a critical and commercial failure, causing EA to take the Medal of Honor series out of its rotation.
Owners of the PS Vita, Sony’s niche handheld, will be able to download Legends of War Patton and Nihilumbra. Legends of War Patton is a World War II strategy game where players can fight in some of history’s classic battles. Released across multiple consoles, Nihilumbra is a platformer where players use multiple powers to overcome enemies and solve puzzles.
The January lineup of free PlayStation Plus games is underwhelming to say the least. A quick glance at the comments section on the PlayStation Blog’s announcement shows that most readers and players are not satisfied. The biggest game is Dragon Age: Origins on the aging PS3 with Grim Fandango Remastered also being a known quantity. The placement of Medal of Honor Warfighter shows a definite lack of quality especially with the flood of shooters currently available. With PS4 launch games like Knack and Killzone Shadow Fall being over two years old, it might be time for Sony to inject a little bit more triple-A into their free offerings for its best-selling console.
