[adsense250itp]Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal announced gamers who pre-order the upcoming Theif reboot on any platform will receive an exclusive in-game mission titled “The Bank Heist.” The new incarnation of the popular stealth combat action adventure game was announced a few months ago and has a target release date of February 2014.
The upcoming bonus mission, which will be exclusive to pre-order customers, pits the Master Thief against one of the City’s most dangerous and secure locations. The Stonemarket First Bank, purported to be the City’s most secure location, will be the mission’s target area. In this mission, the thief will have to steal a coveted family heirloom, referred to as the Star of Auldale. The heirloom is said to be heavily guarded by treacherous traps.
The mission will put players’ thieving skills to the test and require players to outwit security measures found only in this mission. Those that are familiar with the series will recognize that The Bank Heist is an homage to the bank mission from Thief II: The Metal Age.
Our Two Cents
Square Enix and Eidos-Montreal announced the rebooted Thief so long ago, it probably fell off the radar for a lot of gamers. Coming off the heels of a successful Tomb Raider reboot, it’s great to see Thief get some NextGen love as well. Time will tell if gamers will flock back to the series that was so popular in the 1990s/early 2000s, but a slew of good screenshots and a killer trailer should do the trick.
The offering of an exclusive high-stakes mission is a nice bonus for those people that want to pre-order a game that nobody knows much about at this point. Because the studio behind the game has a lot of cred with gamers, SE and Eidos-Montreal should see a nice influx of reservations for the title thanks to this promotion. It’ll be interesting to see if offering exclusive in-game missions becomes more of the norm for pre-orders in 2014.
