Sony Reveals PlayStation VR Price, Launch Window

/ Mar 15th, 2016 No Comments

PlayStation VR

Sony announced PlayStation VR will cost $399 and be available in October 2016 during an event today at the Game Developers Conference.

The virtual reality headset was originally dubbed “Project Morpheus” after being announced at 2014’s GDC. Rumors about the headset’s release date and price have been swirling around ever since the device was officially introduced as PlayStation VR at the 2015 Tokyo Game Show.

Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony, addressed the lengthy wait for an official price and release announcement on the PlayStation Blog. “PlayStation VR represents a transformative experience in gaming, and we wanted to take the time we needed to launch with a broad variety of content and a sufficient supply of hardware.”

PlayStation VR will require a PlayStation Camera to function but it will not be included in the $399 package. The headset itself will be connected to a processor unit which connects to the PS4. House announced that more than 230 developers are working on content for PlayStation VR and that more than 50 games will be available from the October launch until the end of 2016. The Playroom VR will be made available as a free download from the PlayStation Store and provide PlayStation VR owners with six games meant to highlight the features of virtual reality.

Quick Take

For $399 Sony definitely undercuts the $600 Oculus Rift and the $800 HTC Vive. However, the two PC-based sets will be on the market for a lot longer until PlayStation VR’s October debut. Time still remains before the sets are on the market but it will likely be awhile before we can tell if virtual reality will be accepted by a mass market. Will Sony’s cheaper price make it easier to sell to the large PS4 install base? Or will it just be a weaker version of tech that only a niche market embraces? Expect Sony to use every opportunity between now and October to prove that PlayStation VR is something everyone must have.
