Sony teased a PlayStation event on Feb. 20 that could be the long-awaited announcement of the PlayStation 4.
A Facebook status, Tweet and post on the company blog linked to a website with a teaser trailer for the PlayStation 2013 event that will take place in New York at 6 p.m. EST. Sony is expected to livestream the event on their website.
Along with the link on Twitter, the company invited followers to “see the future.” Sony is only saying the press conference will be about the future of the PlayStation business.
A February unveiling would set up the future to arrive by the end of the year. It has been widely expected that the next generation of consoles would be released during the holiday season this year.
Rumors continue to swirl regarding the next-generation console. Specs on dev kits for the new console, codenamed Orbis, were leaked in November. More alleged information was unveiled in December. The secondary codename Thebes was revealed in addition to further specs.
Analysts have said they expect Sony to wait until Microsoft reveals the next-generation Xbox before the company announces a successor to the PlayStation 3. With the potential announcement just weeks away, it is doubtful Microsoft is prepared to show off the next Xbox.
Sony is hoping to avoid the same fate as the current console generation. Microsoft released the Xbox 360 one year before the PlayStation 3.
It will be nice to see Sony finally put an end to the rumors with a solid announcement. Of course, there is always the off chance the event is scheduled to announce the new Parappa the Rapper.
