Generating in excess of 9 times its original goal, Ouya’s crowd-funding campaign has finally come to a successful close. 30 days ago, the creators of the open source console made waves in the industry, exciting gamers the world round and breaking records from the get-go.

The past month has been filled with news of exclusive titles, updated ports, and media content partnerships. Not resting on their laurels, Ouya kept the announcements coming up to final moments of their fundraising campaign.

Continuing in the spirit of openness, Ouya has partnered with Team XBMC to bring their award winning, open source media player and entertainment hub to the console. XBMC, originally known as Xbox Media Center, was first developed as a media center application for the original Xbox in 2004. It is now widely available as a native application for Android, Linux, Mac OS, iOS and Windows. While already available for Android, Team XBMC is working closely with Ouya to ensure maximum compatibility with the Ouya platform. Recognizing a desire for choice, Ouya also announced support for Plex, a competing media center application.

Determined to deliver plenty of audio-centric content at launch, Ouya’s partnered with yet another streaming audio provider in TuneIn.  TuneIn will bring free streaming radio service to the console, offering a variety of music, sports, and news programming from all over the world. Boasting over 70K stations and two million on-demand programs, listeners will have a wide variety of programming to choose from.

On the gaming side of things, the latest developer news comes from Namco Bandai. More of a teaser than an official press release, the two companies announced that they are currently in “active discussions” to bring some of Namco Bandai’s gaming properties to the Ouya console. Carlson Choi, VP of Marketing for Namco Bandai Games America, indicates that the company is currently exploring getting both classic titles and modern franchises to the open source console. Coming from a company that has produced games from Pac-Man to Tekken, there could potentially be some exciting news if and when these talks bear fruit.

Early on in the Kickstarter campaign, Ouya added an Ethernet jack to their board in response to feedback from backers. To show that they they’re still listening, they also gave the console support for up to four controllers at a time.

With just over 63,000 backers and $8.59 million raised, the Ouya console stands as one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns to date. Though the Kickstarter is now closed, Ouya opened up their website, ouya.tv, for pre-orders starting at $109. While it’s unlikely any further hardware changes will be announced in the coming weeks, there will be a plethora of game developer and media content partnership announcements to come. As the first chapter of the Ouya saga comes to a close, it remains to be seen whether or not the momentum will continue in the run up to their official launch.

  2. Joe Van Fossen says:

There’s no official launch date yet, but the expected delivery of the pre-orders from the Kickstarter is March 2013. The expected delivery of all pre-orders since is April 2013. Emphasis on the “expected”
