Robot Entertainment announced its free-to-play tower defense game Orcs Must Die! Unchained is releasing for PS4 on July 18.
Originally released on PC in April, Orcs Must Die! Unchained went through an extensive beta period and was also playable at the 2016 PlayStation Experience.
Orcs Must Die! was first released in October 2011. A sequel followed in 2012 that introduced co-op after it was highly requested by fans. Orcs Must Die! Unchained incorporates the wave-based defense gameplay those familiar with the series have come to know. Players can team up or play solo to build traps from increasingly difficult waves of orcs and other monsters.
Unchained introduces new game types that provide a spin on the tower defense gameplay. Sabotage is a head-to-head party mode that takes two teams of three players and pits them against each other. Players use consumable cards to send waves of enemies at the opposing team. An endless mode and weekly challenges provide additional ways to play.
As a free-to-play game, Unchained limits players’ starting heroes to three. The War Mage, Sorceress, or Blackpaw offer different sets of skills that provide a glimpse into the game’s mechanical depth and strategy. Players earn skulls and coins through regular play, log-in bonuses, and real money purchases to upgrade traps, acquire new heroes, and obtain additional cosmetic skins for heroes.
PlayStation Plus subscribers will also be treated to an exclusive package which contains in-game currency, skins, and consumables. Valued at $20, this package is free until Aug. 17.
