SNES Classic

Nintendo announced the Super Nintendo Classic, a miniature version of its Super Nintendo console, will release on Sept. 29 for $79.99 and feature 21 games.

The SNES Classic is similar in concept to last year’s NES Classic which featured 30 classic games from Nintendo’s first console.

The full list of SNES Classic games is:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
    Donkey Kong Country
    EarthBound
    Final Fantasy III
    F-ZERO
    Kirby Super Star
    Kirby’s Dream Course
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    Mega Man X
    Secret of Mana
    Star Fox
    Star Fox 2
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
    Super Castlevania IV
    Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
    Super Mario Kart
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
    Super Mario World
    Super Metroid
    Super Punch-Out!!
    Yoshi’s Island

Star Fox 2 is one game appearing on the SNES Classic of particular note. Though development on the sequel to Star Fox was finished, the game never received an official release. Players will need to beat the first level of Star Fox to unlock Star Fox 2.

SNES Classic mini consoles will also come with an HDMI cable, a charging cable, and two SNES controllers. The controller cable is five feet long, which is significantly longer than the short ones Nintendo shipped with the NES Classic.

Quick Take

The SNES Classic has an incredible list of games but it also games at a larger price when compared to the NES Classic. The extra controller is nice but it would have been even better had Nintendo pushed the game list to 30, it’s not like the Super Nintendo was short on truly classic games.

Unfortunately, Nintendo also seems quite stubborn to truly allow these consoles to sit on the market for a good amount of time. The company says it will produce significantly more units of the SNES Classic than the NES Classic but that shipments will end in 2017. After the scalping and price gouging of the NES Classic, let’s hope Nintendo handles the SNES Classic with more care and concern for fans.
