NFL Blitz Review (XBLA)

blitz review pic 3

NFL blitz is back in 2012 for XBox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network for another go round of pulse pounding hits, unreal catches and unlockables that made this such an outrageous game. Still, it’ll be enjoyable to fans of the classic in the early 2000’s. While it was great to play a classic football game, there was plenty that made this game enjoyable but there were still a few things that made this game rather annoying. NFL Blitz (2012 edition) is a mix of good and bad, so you’ll be left to make up the decision for yourself whether this game hits the mark or not.

NFL Blitz (2012) Review

If you know Blitz or played for 1 quarter at the arcade on some random date back in 2000 you haven’t missed anything. The game is fast and can turn into a chess match if you know what your doing, otherwise your either throwing bombs to receivers or sending everyone and the kitchen sink at your opponents. The game modes like Quick Play, Gauntlet, Elite and Online Play where you can either go one on one or play with a friend or play as teammates. EA keeps the arcade feel with the hits and sound effects that are welcoming, on the flip side though, you get the exact same playbook from the early 2000′s. I mean c’mon you could have paid any 14-15 year olds to update the playbooks and we would have accepted that. Not to mention another aspect I used to love was the ability for late hits. Who cared if you gave up a 40 yard bomb, if you were able to choke slam your opponents wide receiver you felt a little better about yourself. The NFL recent stance on safety is translating to gaming world and while I respect real-world focus on safety for players, I don’t understand why that has to affect the gaming world. If it was an un-lockable feature I could live with that, but trying to set rules in the gaming world where anything can go in gaming it leaves a poor taste in my mouth.

Presentation

NFL Blitz - XBLA

NFL Blitz - XBLA

Simple and to the point, pick you game mode and go. I wasn’t enthralled here and while it’s easy to live with in the football realm something like what NFL 2k5 did it its presentation would have enhanced the experience. It’s not really necessary but you find that it can only help the experience. Instead, you get what you saw years ago and realize the gap between a $15-$20 game you guy online rather than the full blown $50-$60 game released in stores.

Overall

I enjoyed myself, and it was fun to got back in the past and play a classic game but the game still has a ways to to go before re-establishing itself as one of the cornerstone football franchises.
