July is coming in hot! Even though the summer is a generally mild to poor time for new video game releases. This first week of July has some cool games to sink your teeth into, especially if you’re a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold member.
This week’s new releases include the boss battle gauntlet with Furi, the harshness of viking life with The Banner Saga 2, the overwhelming odds in Inside, and the car wrecking chaos in Carmageddon: Max Damage.
Furi – PS4, PC – July 5
In the tradition of Shadow of the Colossus, Furi simply pits the player against a series of bosses in intense “duel”-like fights. These guardians the player will have to best in combat each have unique skills and move set that make each boss fight different. The concept is about the exhilaration of a difficult battle and the joy that results from besting a tough guardian, while agonizing over how best to utilize Furi’s moves to accomplish victory.
The game mixes the over-the-top verve of Japanese action games with a dual-stick shooter to create a unique combat experience. With stripped down controls allowing the player only to cut, shoot, dodge, and parry; the tense boss fights are about skill and quick reflexes. Character designs for the game were done by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki, and the soundtrack is handled by a bevy of electro musicians.
Furi will be free to PlayStation Plus users for the month of July giving PlayStation 4 owners plenty of time to test their skills against the guardians in the game.
The Banner Saga 2 – Xbox One, PS4 – July 1, July 5
Repost from New Releases Week of 4/19:
“It is time to head back into the cold, brutal combat as the epic Viking tactical RPG returns. The Banner Saga 2 picks up after the events of the first game. Decisions you made against the dredge in the first game will affect the story in The Banner Saga 2. If players haven’t experienced the first game, there is a default path they can choose which makes the choices for them. Regardless, there will be difficult choices in the game to make and will determined who lives, dies, and how to survive.
The Banner Saga 2 features new characters both friendly and antagonistic, but with new character also brings new possible allies. It is your decision to bring them into your clan, leave them, or kill them. More excitingly there is a new race in the Horseborn and where their allegiances stand. Combat will be improved with more enemy variety, different combat victory conditions, more strategic maps, and story delivered during combat. Permadeath endures and the satisfying combat from the first game will return. Also returning is the need to manage resources as you travel through the game, but with expanded roles and consequences.”
The Banner Saga 2 launched on Xbox One on July 1 as part of its Games with Gold program. The game will be available the entire month of July to Xbox Live Gold members. As an added bonus, Xbox One players will get access to an exclusive passive ability called the Tome of X: a book of catalogued pastimes, competition, puzzles. It will unlock automatically and will be useable upon reaching the proper level. The game also launches on PlayStation 4 this week with PS+ members able to purchase it with a 10% discount or a 30% discount off the Banner Saga 1 and 2 complete pack.
Inside – PC, Xbox One – July 7, (June 29)
The minds behind the sublime and creepy Limbo return with their follow-up, Inside. The game features similar themes, visual flair, and gameplay, but improved upon in the six years since Limbo released. Much like the developer’s previous game, Inside places you in the role of a young boy struggling against terrifying evil. Whereas Limbo dealt with the unknown in a fable-like setting, Inside details the struggle against overwhelming odds in a dystopian nightmare. The young boy deals with evil forces attempting to take over the world with experiments on human being. The fantastic gives way to the realistic.
Inside will feel familiar to Limbo except with more splashes of color and a 2.5D presentation. The platforming and puzzle mechanics should make players feel right at home. Later in the game, players get access to a mechanic to control lifeless bodies. Despite similarities, Inside is unique in its own right.
Carmageddon: Max Damage – PS4, Xbox One – July 8
If anyone has been missing their fix of vehicular combat (and battering around soccer balls isn’t doing it for you) then you’re in luck this week. Carmageddon: Max Damage is the console version of Carmageddon: Reincarnation, which original released over a year ago on PC. Max Damage will house all the improvements made to the PC version since its full release. The game allows players to choose from over 30 vehicles each with their own unique characteristics to deliver destruction and mayhem to both cars and innocent bystanders, and power-ups will only add to your destructive capabilities!
Automaniacs will be able to wreak havoc across multiple open world environments and battle arenas like Devils Canyon or the Bleak City. In case you thought the environments will be empty playgrounds to destroy other vehicles, you are mistaken. Max Damage fills your path with pedestrians from all walks of life along with animals and aliens. What a time to be alive! With multiple modes like the Career mode with sixteen chapters to play through, endless freeplay, or multiplayer, in addition there are plenty of different event types to try your hand at, Max Damage should pack some serious replayability.
