Child of Light

Ho! Weary traveler, listen to my tale and be on your way. The way be dark and dangerous, but there be video games on the way! June is out of here like Steve Martin. Now we are heading deep into summer and July. The summer is a mixed bag in terms of video game releases. There are a few cool games on the horizon, but it’s mainly smaller games coming out while bigger developers and publishers spin their wheels until September. The end of June and first week of July have some solid releases with Divinity: Original Sin, Child of Light on PS Vita, Dynasty Warriros: Gundam Reborn, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition and Sniper Elite III.

Divinity: Original Sin – PC, Mac – June 30

Divinity: Original Sin is a single-player and co-op role-playing game from Larian Studios. The game will ship with full modding tools allowing users to create their own single-player and multiplayer adventures and share them.

Players return to Rivellon taking control of two heroes in Original Sin. One is a condemned warrior and the other is a revived heroine. These two heroes share a singular destiny as they suss out the truth in the story of Original Sin.

The game is a prequel to Larian’s Divine Divinity from 2002. Original Sin was funded through KickStarter with Larian raising double its target amount. The game hit Steam Early Access back in January. Now it is finally getting a full release on PC and Mac.

Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition – PS4, Wii U, 360, Xbox One – July 1

Guacamelee originally released on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita last year. It was well received here at Gaming Illustrated and one of the best handheld games in 2013. The Super Turbo Championship Edition is an enhanced version of the game making its way onto the PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Super Turbo Championship Edition features an expanded story, a new boss, new game areas, new abilities and new enemies. It also includes all of the DLC released for vanilla Guacamelee. For players unable to pick up the PS3 or PS Vita version, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Champtionship Edition can’t be missed.

Child of Light – PS Vita – July 1

Child of Light is making its way to the PlayStation Vita this week. The game made its debut on home consoles and PC at the end of April. Child of Light features an interesting spin on the Active Time Battle system by adding some cool strategy/puzzle elements to combat. The side-scrolling/exploration aspects were fun and artistically it was a beautiful game.

Child of Light sees Aurora entering the world of Lemuria after falling under a severe illness. In Lemuria, Aurora finds the world in ruin as Umbra, the Dark Queen has stolen the sun, moon and the stars. It is up to Aurora to save the world of Lemuria and return to her home. Patrick Plourde’s homage to Japanese RPGs can now be taken on the go with the Vita version.

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn – PS3 – July 1

Oh man, it’s Dynasty Warriors! And Gundam! Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn is the fourth installment the Gundam spin-off series of Dynasty Warriors. Originally released in Japan back in Dec. 2013 on PS3 and PS Vita, the North American version is a digital-only release on PS3. Unlike previous entries in the series, Gundam Reborn will not feature an English dub. The game features over 120 units, a staggering amount of Gundams. Gundam Reborn features a more realistic look, new gameplay elements and the return of space battles.

Sniper Elite III – PS3, PS4, 360, Xbox One – July 1

Sniper Elite III is the third installment in Rebellion Games’ tactical shooter series. The game continues the story of elite OSS sniper Karl Fairburne during World War II. This third installment sees Fairburne heading to North Africa to fight in the exotic locale against a deadly new foe.
