New Releases: Week of 6/19

E3 has come and gone, and to be honest was a bit underwhelming. It did promise us many exciting games to look forward to for the rest of 2016. Also since the show is over, new video game can come out again!
This week’s new releases include the long delayed Mighty No. 9, the online team-based zombie shooter Umbrella Corps, the fanciful Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U, and the iconic mash-up of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.
Mighty No. 9 – PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC – June 21
It is the year 20XX, Beck is the ninth in a line of powerful robots called the Mighty Numbers designed to fight against each other in the Battle Colosseum (sic). He happens to be the only one not infected by a computer virus that has caused the other robotic creatures in the world to go on a rampage. It is up to Beck to battle through the world and the crazed mechanoids to discover the identity of the villain who unleashed the virus on the world.
Mighty No. 9 was one of the early massive Kickstarter successes and also a massive cautionary tale about backing game development. The game underwent numerous delays on its road to a June release missing release date after release date (honestly, there is still time to announce a delay before Tuesday). Despite the delays, Mighty No. 9 is looking to be a worthy successor to the Blue Bomber. The game will provide twelve levels and bosses to tackle with new skills and abilities to unlock over the course of the game.
Players can also undertake mini missions during the game in the Challenge Mode or try to beat all the bosses at once in Boss Rush mode. For fans looking to amp up the challenge after beating the game, it will have unlockable hard, hyper and maniac difficulty modes. It will come complete with leaderboards and rankings to show off in Score attack. Two players can play through the game together as Beck and his partner Call or face off online racing through the stages in a head to head battle.
Umbrella Corps – PS4, PC – June 21
It has been twelve years since the Umbrella Corporation fell, but its legacy is still being felt today. The company’s valuable viral BOW research information is still floating out in the world begging to be discovered and used. Many corporations want that research and have hired mercenaries to go search for Umbrella’s remnants and secrets in hopes of finding information on Umbrella’s bio-wepaons technologies. Naturally, this brings corporations and their mercenaries into conflict as they both are out searching zombie infested areas for the research. It will take quick thinking, reflexes, and team work to defeat the other mercenaries and gain that precious information.
Umbrella Corps is a departure for the Resident Evil series by focusing on quick, intense competitive online play between two teams of mercenaries. Team will fight in iconic maps based on the history of the series. Players on each team are outfitted with a gun and explosive weapon on top of specialized gear to be the first one to claim victory and the research. The unique weaponry of Umbrella Corps include the Brainer, a melee axe that connects straight with the skull, a Tactical Shield allowing players to use zombies as cover, Terrain Spikes which mount on boots and allow players to trample enemies, and the Zombie Jammer which can repel zombies when activated. Another unique feature of the game is the One Life Match mode, where both teams play with no respawns. They must contend with each other and the zombies that populate each map.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games – Wii U – June 24
Repost from New Releases 3/13/16:
“The Olympic Games are coming up and finally world class athletes are coming back to video games. Everyone’s favorite sports stars Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog are lacing up and gearing out for the 2016 Olympic Games in beautiful Rio de Janeiro. This gives players around the world another opportunity to tackle the summer games with characters from the most popular video game franchises around.
No, they won’t be taking on FloJo (although you can make a Mii version of the track legend), but competing against over 40 characters from both Mario and Sonic’s universe including Birdo, Vector, Larry, Blaze, and more. Don’t worry everyone’s favorite competitor Waluigi will be competing. Players will be able to participate in over fourteen Olympic events include football, golf, archery, boxing, beach volleyball, table tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, and much more. Also enjoy the Road to the Olympics (or regular events) as your Mii character. Choose between Sonic or Mario, train, and explore Rio while trying to solve some of the mysterious happenings in the town.”
The Wii U version will feature higher resolution graphics compared to its portable predecessor and contains a version exclusive sporting event. To celebrate the first time since 1924 that Rugby has been played at the Olympic Games, Mario, Sonic and friends can get rough and rowdy on the Rugby field.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE – Wii U – June 24
Modern-day Tokyo is under attack from terrible forces from another dimension called Mirages. These Mirages steal people from Tokyo taking them to an alternate dimension and stealing their creative energies. It is up to you and a couple of your closest friends to stop the Mirages. In order to stand up against the rogue Mirages, you’ll need all of your gang’s creative power, which will manifest as iconic Fire Emblem characters (basically Personas). Saving Tokyo will be tough meaning you and your friends will have to give the performance of your lives to accomplish it.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is the long awaited Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem mash-up that got teased in the early days of the Wii U. It is fitting it gets a release in the final throes of the system. The game melds elements of both series to form a completely new game with an idol-centric focus. Gameplay is turn-based with the key being to exploit an enemy’s weakness to certain attacks and create an opening to do massive damage with character’s entertainment-themed attacks. The characters of the game won’t summon or fuse demons, rather they will summon Fire Emblem characters and fuse items to create strong weapons and abilities to defeat their enemies. The music in the game will come from Japanese juggernaut Avex.
