Vampyr – PS4, Xbox One, PC – June 5

Death isn’t the end is a hard lesson Dr. Jonathan Reid had to learn. When he was left for dead in a mass grave in the midst of the Spanish Influenza outbreak in London, he is shocked to awaken with a terrible hunger. In his stupor, Dr. Reid commits a heinous act that leaves him confused. Before he can get his bearings, he finds himself hunted by an organized group of thugs.

As he flees their animosity, he ends up by happenstance in the office of a vampire hunter. Turns out the vampire hunter is an admirer of Jonathan’s work before the war, and he offers him an interesting opportunity to work the night shift in Pembroke Hospital. With the Spanish Influenza raveging London, Dr. Reid is needed to help the sick and dying, vampire or not. As he takes up residency in Pembroke, he must find out who turned him and left him alone, a way to help the sick, and what kind of vampiric society exists within London.

Vampyr has a lot of cool gameplay systems in place. Combat has a unique set of skills and power for Jonathan to utilize. The core combat comes in the form of melee combat with lots of different types of weapons to master, but the most interesting and exciting are Jonathan’s blood powers, which can deal devastating damage. Battles are nuanced with different enemies have varying resistances requiring you to shift strategy on the fly or be overwhelmed.

The most ambitious and intriguing aspect of Vampyr, however, is its deep citizen management system. As Dr. Reid resumes his life as a vampire and doctor in Pembroke, he meets a wide variety of citizens across four different districts. As Dr. Reid, you’ll have to make hard decisions on whether to save or eat different citizens and those decisions will have deep ramifications across the districts.

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido – Switch, 3DS – June 8

Tyranny reigns as an evil empire has risen to power. The empire not only caused an endless cycle of war to start, but has also seized the world’s supply of sushi taking the joy of technique and fresh fish from the people. There is hope yet though, a young man named Musashi has the potential to rise up and become a hero. As he ventures across the land to befriend Sushi Sprites and ascend to the rank of true Sushi Striker, only he can take back sushi from the empire.

Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido.

The battlefield is the dining room where warriors duke it out across conveyor belts of sushi. Seven rows of sushi are where you and your opponent try to match colored plates of sushi as fast as possible. Three of them belong to you and three to your opponent with one shared lane of sushi to utilize. Try to stack plates as high as possible to send to your opponents, the higher the stack the more damage you’ll deal. That’s the basics of sushi combat, but there is plenty of depth to explore with specialized items, jubilee gauge, favorite items, and 30+ sushi sprites to recruit with special skills and new forms to awaken.

Skilled sushi strikers can play against a friend or random opponent in the game’s multiplayer modes. Whether playing online or offline, you can compete in two different modes: tasteful battles, a no frills battle to prove mastery of stacking, and chaos battles, a wild melee where you can use tons of capsules to gain the advantage. For the Switch version, players can split Joy-Cons to play against each other and share the screen, while the 3DS version allows players to play against each other using local wireless.
