Rime

The last full week of May brings some heat. It is a big week for Switch owners as some serious gameage comes out for the system giving it a much needed boost of variety.

This week’s new releases include Disgaea 5 Complete, Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception, Guilty Gears Xrd Revelator 2, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, and Rime.

Disgaea 5 Complete – Switch – May 23

In a galaxy of countless Netherworlds, Overlords are only kept in check by other Overlords. This balance is essential to keeping anyone Overlord from becoming too powerful. That changes with the appearance of Demon Emperor Void Dark and his army, the Lost, which has ravaged many other Netherworlds throwing this delicate balance off.

One lone demon stands against Void Dark and the Lost to oppose their unchecked avarice. Killia has sworn revenge against the Lost and promises to crush them. By happenstance he helps save Princess Overlord Seraphina from Void Dark forming an alliance that will help him oppose the unimaginably powerful Void Dark.

Disgaea 5 Complete adds a bunch of new systems to the core strategy RPG mechanics of the series. In battle players can see resistances and affiliation statistics when highlighting a unit, a new revenge system comes into play when a party member dies, some characters can pair up in duos to use special moves called fusion skills, a new type of special attack appears, and new character classes.

Disgaea 5 Complete also includes all the previously released DLC in one package for the Nintendo Switch.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception – PS4, PS Vita – May 23

Haku wakes up in an unfamiliar place with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The wilderness is hostile and the danger palpable, but luckily he is rescued by Kuon, a beautiful girl with animal ears and a beastlike tail, yeah that’s what this kind of game is. Eventually, the two team up and encounter a bunch of plucky characters, form deep bonds, battle powerful enemies, and Haku will find himself caught up in the political stuggles of the nation of Yamato.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception is split up between two modes adventure mode and battle mode. In adventure mode the story unfolds like a visual novel with specific points allowing you to choose where Haku goes. As the story progresses you’ll fight in strategy RPG battles during battle mode in the game’s critical confrontations. By taking advantage of the turn-based combat, unique Attack Chain mechanics,, and great timing for time-based attacks and blocks, you’ll be able to best foes. Further adding depth to combat there is a rewind function, elemental affinities/weaknesses, and unique character skills. There is plenty to do in the game’s 40+ hours.

Guilty Gears Xrd Revelator 2 – PS4, PS3 – May 26

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator 2 is the latest update to Guilty Gear Xrd bringing with it two new characters: Baiken and Answer, and a host of other new features. It’ll feature new stages, new moves, and animations with plenty more content to discover.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers – Switch – May 26

Who’d have thunk after a decade we’d finally see another update to Street Fighter II, but the Nintendo Switch is an alluring siren. Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers updates the gameplay from Super Street Fighter II Turbo by introducing grapple breaks, tweaks to combo timing, and re-balances the game. The game will be playable in its classic pixel art style and an updated HD version similar to Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. You can switch between the two at will.

You can also team up with a friend to battle a CPU opponent in a new co-op mode allowing for two-character combos and pincer attacks. Or battle with a friend in local multiplayer or online. The game also comes with a 250+ page digital art book to look through.
