Injustice 2

May keeps rolling along with more new games for you. While sparser than April, May still has some heavy hitters.

This week’s new releases include Injustice 2, The Surge, and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Injustice 2 – PS4, Xbox One – May 16

Following the overthrow of High Councilor, Batman and his allies struggle to put the pieces of society back together. However, getting rid of Superman didn’t end his reign, the Son of Krypton’s supporters seek to put his regime back in place by fighting against the Dark Knight.

Not only does Batman fight against the last bits of Superman’s collaborators but he and his allies face an even greater threat in the merciless faction led by Gorilla Grodd that takes out any heroes that gets in its way. If the deck wasn’t stacked against them already, there is the whole coming of Brainiac that seeks to put Earth’s existence to an end. To fight these new threats, Batman must find brave new allies.

Many of the combat systems from Injustice: Gods Among Us return with some new techniques to expand evasion and defense. Unlike the first game, certain environmental attacks are now blockable with the exception of longer start up moves.

A new “Multiverse” mode allows players to fight battles with various handicaps and special stipulations. Online combat will give players the opportunity to turn off gear system upgrades and fight at base level. Players can also form “Guilds” with up to 50 other players.

The most in-depth new system is the Gear System, which is an RPG-like system where loot drops during battle. These loot drops are special costume pieces that augment a character’s stats. Different gear pieces will improve one of four base stats on top of cosmetic improvements. Loot boxes can be purchased with different equipment pieces.

The Surge – PS4, Xbox One, PC – May 16

War and global warming have ravaged the world leaving it depleted of its natural resources. CERO, a mega-corporation set out to save the world, but the best intentions of faceless corporations tend to fall apart. Technology has proliferated to a point where humans have access to powerful exo-suits and cybernetic implants. The huge complex has fallen into disarray with environmental hazards and crazed enemies, it’ll be up to you as an employee to survive the CERO complex using your skills and exp-suit.

The Surge requires you to study your enemies carefully before heading into battle. Hack and slashing won’t serve you well with challenging and visceral gameplay. The game’s dynamic targeting system allows you to target limbs to dismember them to kill them easier or grab specific loot.

Your exo-suit will be a key component in combat. Fit your rig with different types of enhancements: light, medium or heavy to customize your weaponry to your play style. The cybernetic enhancements give you special stats. An important part of combat will be balancing your rig with your implants to get the edge in battle.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia – 3DS – May 16

War rages between two kingdoms… stop me if you’ve heard this before. The kingdom of Zofia and Rigel are in embittered conflict. Rigel aggressively seeking to conquer Zofia threatening the peace of Valentia. To save Valentia two armies will have to embark on very important missions in parallel.

Childhood friends, Alm and Celica haven’t seen each other in a while, but with Zofia in danger, their paths cross again. Both lead their own armies on vital missions to help keep Zofia from ruin. Alm joins the rebel army, the Deliverance to stop a coup in Zofia.

Celica feels Zofia’s misfortunes are more spiritually based. So she and her allies embark across pirate infested waters to find the goddess Mila. Both missions will have to succeed if they want to save Zofia and Valentia.

The core Fire Emblem gameplay returns with deep strategic battles and tactical combat. Unlike other Fire Emblem games, Echoes allows you to explore dungeons in free roaming exploration. Collect loot, items and fight enemies in grid-based battles, but be careful dungeon crawling takes stamina.

Another new feature is visiting full villages and towns to talk to locals, shoo, take on quests, and recruit new allies. The game’s amiibo support allows players to summon shadow warriors or allied monsters for one turn at the expense of a character’s health. Fire Emblem amiibo summon warriors and other amiibos summon allied monsters.
