Smoke and Sacrifice review

May closes out with a solid week of releases. As we head into E3 and what looks to be a surprisingly solid summer, we’ve had a great start to 2018 in terms of quality releases.

This week’s new releases include Sega Genesis Classics, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Yoku’s Island Express, and Smoke and Sacrifice.

Sega Genesis Classics – PS4, Xbox One, PC – May 29

In the latest collection of classic Genesis titles, some changes have been made since Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. While both Ecco the Dolphin titles, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles have been removed, many new games have been added including Gunstar Heroes, Space Harrier, The Revenge of Shinobi, Wonder Boy in Monster World, ToeJam & Earl, among others.

These new additions bring the count of games in the latest collection to 50 games, which is a hell of a value at $29.99. Not only does it collect 50 games, the Sega Genesis Collection includes some modern features like online multiplayer, achievements, mirror modes, rewind functionality, and save states.

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection – Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC – May 29

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise this collection brings together 12 titles from the series’ expansive history. It includes Street Fighter, Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III, Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and Street Fighter III: Third Strike all with perfect arcade balance.

Four of the collection’s games include online play: Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. As you wait in the lobby for a match, you can compete in fights against the CPU. Lobbies support up to four players. Players can compete for prestige in Ranked matches with each game having its own global leaderboards. To ensure low-latency battles, the “rewind” function allows players to set their own latency.

The Nintendo Switch version features an exclusive mode: Super Street Fighter II: The Tournament Battle. It is a special recreation of the networking of four arcade cabinets that allowed up to eight players to compete in a bracket-based tournament.

Yoku’s Island Express – Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC – May 29

Ain’t nothing sweeter than the sweet island life. That’s what Yoku the Dung Beetle was after when he took the postmaster job on Mokumana Island. He thought it would be nothing but soaking up the sun and delivering the occasional mail on this tropical paradise. Yet it turns out there was more to Mokumana Island than he thought. An ancient island deity is trapped in a restless sleep and The God Slayer is loose on the island, and it is up to Yoku help wake the god from its slumber.

Unfortunately, this year Sachi must give up her child to appease the Sun Tree. Despite the sacrifice everything goes awry shortly after. With the Sun Tree failing, Sachi learns of the dark secret of the village. To find the deeper truth she must venture below the Sun Tree and explore the smoke of the underworld.
