New Releases: Week of 4/9/17
Kalvin Martinez / Apr 9th, 2017 No Comments
April rolls right along from JRPG perfection to the revival of a long dormant genre. The collectathon makes a return this week, but whether it is triumphant or not will depend on your enjoyment of collecting a bunch of stuff and jumping.
This week’s new releases include Yooka-Laylee, Cosmic Star Heroine, Crawl, and Mr. Shifty.
Yooka-Laylee – PS4, Xbox One, PC – April 11
The chill duo of Yooka and Laylee are chillaxing in their home in Shipwreck Creek minding their own business when some nefarious characters start doing hoodrat stuff. Capital B and his partner Dr. Quack are aiming to increase the profits of Hivory Towers by sucking up all the world’s books.
A casualty of this plot is Laylee’s magical book and its golden pages called Pagies. Capital B and Dr. Quack’s scheme speads those Pagies all over the five Tome worlds and Hivory Towers. It is up to Yooka and Laylee to venture out and collect all those Pagies!
As a collectathon, Yooka and Laylee will have to use a number of abilities and special moves to overcome platforming challenges to collect Pagies and other baubles. It is the partnership between the two that forms the crux of the gameplay. It is largely a game for those nostalgic for the late 90s style platformer, which is its strength and one of its weaknesses.
Here is an excerpt from our Yooka-Laylee review by Ben Sheene:
“Yooka-Laylee has one foot in a time capsule and one foot outside of it, effectively meshing classic gameplay with modern trends in the industry. Players funded this Kickstarter because they wanted a game just like Banjo-Kazooie from the people that made it, and Yooka-Laylee is exactly what the backers likely expected.”

Crawl – PS4, Xbox One, PC – April 11
Crawl shakes up what it means to be a local multiplayer game. It isn’t co-operative and not directly competitive yet you’ll be at your friends’ throats as you battle for control. Crawl pits up to four players against each other in a unique dungeon crawler where three people control monsters and one person controls the warrior in a tense 30 minute match.
While one person acts as warrior exploring the dungeon, collecting gold and buying power-ups and spells, everyone else controls the monsters and traps in the game. Everyone is vying to slay the warrior for the chance to be the one exploring the dungeons.
The deck is stacked against the warrior because everything from different monster summons to three people controlling a massive boss is aiming to shift control constantly.
Outside of that there is plenty to unlock from evolving monsters to more items. Crawl is a new way to play at home with friends, enemies or frenemies.
Cosmic Star Heroine – PS4 – April 11
In Cosmic Star Heroine, Alyssa L’Salle is one of the galactic government’s ace operatives having saved the galaxy a time or two, but saving the galaxy doesn’t mean much when you start stepping on toes. After uncovering a dark conspiracy within the galactic government she is outted as a legendary spy and people’s champion effectively ruining her cover.
While she is adored by the public, she is now being hunted. One part of putting away bad guys as a spy is no one knows who you are, but now with her cover blown all the evil organization she’s crossed are out to kill her. Can Alyssa expose the government conspiracy while protecting her own neck?
Cosmic Star Heroine is a throwback inspired by classic RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star VI. The game features a retro 16-bit sci-fi aesthetic with modern turn-based gameplay. Alyssa will have plenty of help on her journey with 11 characters to form a party with and an expandable base ship to explore the galaxy.
Mr. Shifty – Switch, PC – April 13
Mr. Shifty answers the question of what would happen if Solid Snake was not so solid and could teleport be in a Hotline Miami style game. Lead the titular character through a heist to break into one of the world’s most secure facility. Using the power to shift through walls, bullets, and teleport across huge distances to infiltrate and avoid detection.
Stealth is key in Mr. Shifty because one shot kills. Employ deception, distraction and trickery to toy with enemies as they try to find you. If you overestimate your abilities the enemy can overwhelm you with tactics to stop your heist.
