Happy Easter, if you celebrate it. Make sure to eat some gross chocolate in the form of bunnies, but stay sharp because new video games are coming this week. April is a relatively slow month moving forward with a few notable releases sprinkled throughout. This week though has some gems.
The behemoth is back, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin releases this week giving you more punishment. A modern masterpiece is coming to a Sony console finally this week when Bastion releases on the PS4.
Wii U owners on a budget can get into some Affordable Space Adventures. 3DS owners are going to have quite a bit to choose from, more so if you have a New 3DS XL, with Etrian Mystery Dungeon, Pokémon Rumble World, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin – PS4, Xbox One – April 7
Dark Souls II comes to current-gen consoles with Scholar of the First Sin. It features the main game and the three DLC campaigns released since the game’s original release. Scholar of the First Sin includes remastered graphics and increased capacity for multiplayer on PS4 and Xbox One. It also adds in online matchmaking, new events, new “world additions”, in addition to other improvements. If you skipped out on Dark Souls II on old-gen or PC then Scholar of the First Sin is a good way to jump into the punishing action.
Bastion – PS4 – April 7
The Calamity hit and everything was left in ruins. The Kid woke up not knowing what happened to Caelondia, but there isn’t time for him to figure it out because everything is falling to pieces. Or more accurately forming to pieces. What the Kid does know is he has to head to the Bastion because any survivors would be there. It is no easy task because the world is overrun by baddies out to cause the Kid hard. But the Kid is tough and can carry himself, so he makes it to the Bastion. There he finds Rucks, whom tells the Kid he has to get the Bastion functioning again. It is up to the Kid to get the cores the Bastion needs to get working again.
Bastion is a masterpiece, both in terms of action-RPG gameplay and narrative. The use of narration by Rucks is incredible, and the game is worth checking out for the sublime voice acting by Logan Cunningham. Much like Super Giant Game’s follow-up Transistor, Bastion features a brilliant balance of gameplay, story, voice acting, visuals, and music. Darren Korb’s soundtrack helps bring this dystopian frontier action-RPG to life. Bastion is part of PlayStation’s Spring Fever 2015 promotion, which means you can get a discount on the game this week. Also, the PS Vita version (launching later) will be available as a cross-buy promotion.
Etrian Mystery Dungeon – 3DS – April 7

The Mystery Dungeon series links up with the Etrian Odyssey series to give you a rougelike with some map heavy aspects! Mixing up the two series results in a fun, addictive dungeon crawler with some cool monster slaying action. Much like Persona Q applying elements from the Etrian series to other games results in some very cool results. Give this game a look if you need something to occupy your 3DS.
Pokémon Rumble World – 3DS – April 8
Hot off the presses is the recently announced Pokémon Rumble World. In Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct on April 1, Nintendo revealed a new entry in the Pokémon Rumble series would be coming to 3DS, and soon! Pokémon Rumble World has 719 toy Pokémon for you to add to your collection. It includes Pokémon from Red/Blue all the way up to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, so you can catch them as all a Miivatar. Besting toy Pokémon in battle adds them befriends them and allows you to bring them along on your adventure.
In Pokémon Rumble World the king of the Kingdom of Toys asks you to show up some no good showboat
magician illusionist by collecting as many toy Pokémon as you can. Increase your adventurer rank to gain access to new items and stages, and collect all 719 toy Pokémon. The game is another free-to-play game from Nintendo, so you will use Poké Diamonds as currency for various things in the game.
Affordable Space Adventures – Wii U – April 9
Don’t have a lot of money to spend? Wish you could enjoy some space adventures? Well, KnapNok Games has the answer for you in Affordable Space Adventures. In the game, Uexplore offers people space adventures with the same comfort and safety of your more expensive space craft, but on a more modest scale. The Small Craft is a fun way to explore space that utilizes a Heads Down Display to give the same experience you’d get with a luxury craft’s Heads Up Display.
Enjoy this 2D side-scrolling space sim solo or with 2 or 3 other players using communication to ensure success. The game utilizes the GamePad allowing players to manage their ship’s cockpit via the “Heads Down Display. Make sure your systems are in order to avoid detection. The game uses the Wii U hardware in a unique way to deliver some intense stealth puzzle action.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D – New 3DS XL – April 10
A battle between two hulking titans created a world out of infinite ocean, life sprung up on these titans’ corpses eons later. The Homs formed on the Bionis, and the Machina came to be on the Mechonis. Soon the organic Homs began fighting the mechanical Machina getting locked into a war mirroring that of their home titans. The conflict was bloody with the Machina having the upper hand.
It was thanks to Dunbar and his use of the legendary “Monado”, which drove back the Machina. Peace resumed on the Bionis, but only temporarily. The Machina returned even deadlier before with an attack on Section 9. The attack prompted Shulk, a young man from Section 9, to take up the “Monado” in Dunbar’s place, and seek a way to end the Machina’s new found aggression.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is the first exclusive to leverage the full potential of the New 3DS XL. The game runs great thanks to the increased processing power, and the C-Stick camera controls are a good addition. More importantly, this allows anyone who hasn’t experienced this JRPG excellence, thanks to insane second-hand prices, a dumb GameStop exclusive deal by Nintendo, and a small pressing of copies, to get their hands on Shulk’s compelling adventure. NOTE THIS IS A NEW 3DS XL ONLY TITLE.
