Another month fades bringing the end of 2015 into rapid view. Hopefully, you all celebrate this Sunday with half priced candy and stock up for this week’s new releases. It wouldn’t be a holiday season if we didn’t have a new Call of Duty. A new Call of Duty also results in a light week for new games.
This week has a little bit for everyone with some highly custom racing in Need for Speed, some roguelike-like RPG combat in Dragon Fin Soup, some Call of Dutying in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, and some gotta catch ’em all in Yo-Kai Watch.
Need for Speed – PS4, Xbox One – November 3
Take to the streets of Ventura Bay in Need for Speed. Ventura Bay is a perfect place for those looking to make a name for themselves and their driving skills. With a diverse number of locations to race on, racers can put their skills to the test. Whether racing in downtown Burnwood, the steep inclines of Crescent Mountains, and the commercial district of Royal Park, or the narrow roads of South Port, among others, it’ll take all you got to earn recognition and respect.
Need for Speed marks a full reboot for the series allowing for a fresh take and new ideas. The game has five styles for players to try out as they race around Ventura Bay. Whether favoring an Outlaw approach with a habit of out running the cops, drifting with Style, constantly tweaking your car to perfect with a Build approach, favoring tops speeds and pushing the limits with Speed, or riding with others in the Crew method; there are playstyles for however you want to play.
Dragon Fin Soup – PS4, PS3, PS Vita, PC – November 3
Asura is a world of wonder as it rests on the back of an enormous space turtle. Red Robin is a bounty hunter with a penchant for over indulging in alcohol. Okay, well, she is a raging alcoholic, but a charming one. While Red Robin drinks to forget her past, events force her to explore Asura to discover the secrets of her past that she desperately tries to neglect.
Dragon Fin Soup blends tactical RPG combat with procedural generated dungeons. The game has two different modes for players to try out. Story mode plays out like an RPG, while Survival mode gets ride of the story focusing on testing the players skills with threats of permadeath (if you die then you have to start over). The mix of roguelike and story-driven gameplay is a unique contrast. PlayStation Plus users can get Dragon Fin Soup free for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita with cross-buy when it releases this week.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III – PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, PC – November 6
The future is a bleak place, as usual. In 2065, 40 years after the events of Black Op II, warfare has changed due to air defenses rendering air assaults useless. Covert operations are the way countries settle conflict now. Technology has run amok creating high-tech weaponry for soldiers and soldiers with extraordinary abilities. Cyborgism is becoming a rapid issue and people fear a robotic takeover. You take on the role of a supersoldier to resolve the problems of a divided world.
The campaign can be tackled solo or with three friends in four player co-op. Multiplayer for Black Ops III features some new improvements like the new chained-movement system allowing for more fluidity in combat (ability to wall jump and continually sprint without a perk), and full weapon customization. The biggest change is the Specialist system, which gives players the option of playing a one of nine supersoldier with unique looks, weapons and abilities. It may change how player level up and play competitively. Zombies also make a return with two full storylines and multiplayer for players to sink their teeth into.
Yo-Kai Watch – 3DS – November 6
The Yo-kai are not ghosts, monster or creatures, they simply are Yo-kai based on the Yokai of Japanese folklore. These Yo-kai are usually causing mischief and are all over our world. Nate Adams is given a Yo-Kai Watch, which allows him to see the Yo-kai. With the watch, he journeys around his town searching, befriending, and battling Yo-Kai, while also solving problems caused by them.
In order for Nate to befriend a Yo-Kai, he must battle with them first and impress them during battle. After besting a Yo-Kai in battle they reward Nate with their medal allowing him to summon them from his watch. Nate needs to capture specific Yo-Kai to help him along his main quest of solving problems and defeating evil. There are 200 Yo-Kai for Nate to find and befriend, while the various Yo-Kai can evolve and become strong by combining them with items or other Yo-Kai. Each Yo-Kai has its own strength and weaknesses that will aid Nate in his journey.
