It is Halloween this week, but the new video games coming out are decidedly not spooky. Hopefully, you got your scares in over the weekend because there are stars to collect, combos to perform, and sick killstreaks to earn.
This week’s new releases include BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Owlboy, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and Mario Party: Star Rush.
BlazBlue: Central Fiction – PS4, PS3 – November 1
Central Fiction is the fourth game in the BlazBlue series and the first not to be dubbed in English. The story takes place over three acts in Arcade Mode and concludes the Azure Saga set up in Calamity Trigger. Central Fiction also introduces several new characters to the series: Hibiki Kohaku, Naoto Kurogane, Nine the Phantom, and Saya/Hades Izanami. Es, Susano’o, and Mai Natsume are new to the console version of the game.
One big change in Central Fiction is the Overdrive activation shows up as a count down timer under the Burst Gauge. Two new gameplay mechanics also show up: Exceed Accel and Active Flow.
Exceed Accel is a special type of Distortion Drive that allows players to perform a special, heavy damage move that ends Overdrive immediately upon connecting. Active Flow is the opposite of a negative status penalty. When players go on the offensive they enter Active Flow. In Active Flow damage is boosted, Burst gauge recovery is increased, and increases damage done in Exceed Accel.
Es will be a free DLC character for the first two weeks following release.
Owlboy – PC – November 1
Set in the land of the sky, Owlboy centers on Otus, an owl-human hybrid. Sadly, Otis is a mute, which makes it difficult for him to live up to the expectations of Owl-hood. That all changes when his village is attacked by sky pirates. Otus will have to overcome his adversity and set out on a journey to save his village.
Owlboy functions as a love letter to pixel art with a modern tiwst. Players will explore a 2D open-world with a unique sense of exploration through Otus’ ability to fly. Combat involves Otus carrying friends who act as gunners to fight for him. Every gunner has their own special abilities and stories of their own to discover. Otus will explore giant dungeons and conquer big, challenging bosses.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare – PS4, Xbox One, PC – November 4
No one saw it coming. The attack was sudden and fierce leaving the United Nation Space Alliance reeling. Following the attack on the UNSA’s headquarters, Lt. Nick Reyes is tasked with striking back against the Settlement Defense Front. Helming the Retribution, one of the last remaining warships, Reyes leads the last of the remaining coalition forces. Reyes must bring the SDF to its knees.
The campaign marks new territory for the series, outer space. Infinite Warfare’s campaign introduces new gameplay mechanics like zero-gravity environments (previously and briefly seen in Call of Duty: Ghosts) and aerial combat. To navigate these zero-gravity environments, players are outfitted with boost packs and grappling hooks, which can also be used in gameplay. Aerial combat is done in Nick Reyes’ transforming fighter, the Jackal, and allows for open exploration of space. Players can visit different planets, satellites and asteroids throughout the solar system.
Multiplayer in Infinite Warfare sees some changes with maps focused on the players, a movement system based on momentum, more customization, and a new combat system based around combat rigs. Infinite Warfare adds a ton of new weapons to multiplayer combat to suit the game’s new setting. The lethal and tactical weapons take advantage of the new futuristic setting, and refine the Pick 10 system. Maps also take players to new settings around the solar system to battle it out on different planets.
Combat Rigs take place of the traditional class system with these powerful rigs capable of delivering break neck gameplay. Rigs have access to “Payloads”, which are high power weapons or abilities, and “traits” are persistent abilities similar to perks. There are six combat rigs to choose from: Warfighter, FTL, Merc, Phantom, Stryker, and Synaptic with each rig able to hold 3 payloads and 3 traits that can be customized before battle. Different rigs allow for different strategies, choosing the right one will help compliment your play style.
It wouldn’t be a new Call of Duty without a special zombie mode. For Infinite Warfare, it is Zombies in Spaceland, which transports players to a 1980s amusement park full of crazy attractions, an arcade, and a wild rollercoaster. The co-op experience adds new gameplay elements to the mix including the new After Life Arcade and Fate & Fortune Cards.
Special Editions of Infinite Warfare include a remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare simply called Modern Warfare Remastered.
Mario Party: Star Rush – 3DS – November 4
Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in! It is time to party again… That sounds exciting until you realize it is a Mario Party. Only a year after Mario Party 10, we’re once again getting the opportunity to gather stars, play minigames, and backstab our friends in Mario Party: Star Rush for the 3DS. Luckily, Star Rush sees the Mario Party formula getting an overhaul to make sure the party never ends.

In the game mode, you and your friends plays as Toads and you must race around different world to gather stars from bosses. No longer do you have to wait for your turn, now you can move around freely looking for the best way to win. While you play as Toads, you can recruit allies from the Mushroom Kingdom like Mario and Peach to help you defeat tough bosses.
Other modes include Coinathalon, where players race to collect coins and sabotage each other in a bunch of minigames; Mario Shuffle, which is a weird take on a checker or chess type game board; Boo’s Block Party is a puzzle game, where you can break large chains of blocks to send over to your opponent; and many more.
Mario Party: Star Rush launches alongside a new set of Mario Party amiibo adding to the list of compatible amiibo. Outside of new poses for Wario. Rosalina, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong; the line-up adds Daisy, Waluigi, and a glow-in-the-dark Boo to the existing set of Mario Party amiibo.
