Update: Sony sent out an invitation to media for the “PlayStation Meeting” on Sept. 7. It will be held at 3 p.m. ET. The company the event is “about the PlayStation business.” Sony is expected to livestream the event.
Sony is preparing to reveal an updated version of the PlayStation 4 on Sept. 7 in New York City, according to a report by Gameblog.
Codenamed “Neo” and nicknamed “PS4.5,” the console will be an upgrade over the current model PS4. The new console is reported to have 4K support, although it is unclear if that means games will be made in 4K or strictly that it will support 4K video playback. Regardless, the new PlayStation console is expected to be more powerful than the current PS4.
With more power and features, it is expected that the hardware will accordingly cost more than the current PS4.
Sony has previously confirmed a new version of the PS4 would release in the spring, but no further details have been revealed.
The company has insisted that releasing the new model will not leave the original PS4 behind, stating that the majority of games will be playable on both the current and upgraded iterations of the PS4.
Sony also held an event in New York to reveal the PS4. No event invitations have been received by press and the report offers no details regarding a potential time or setting for the event.
With Sony already indicating that a new console model will be released in the spring, it makes sense that the company is finally preparing to officially unveil it. However, the timing may not be ideal, if the report is true. Announcing a new console now would surely make a dent in potential holiday earnings for Sony, so we would not be surprised if the company held off the unveiling.
