New PlayStation Vita Model & Bundle Launches Spring

PS Vita New

Sony revealed North America will receive a new slimmer and lighter PlayStation Vita model this Spring. The new PS Vita will be available as part of a Borderlands 2 bundle.

When the new model launches, it will be as the Borderlands 2 Limited Edition PlayStation Vita bundle. The bundle will include the new PCH-2000 series model in black, Borderlands 2, six DLC packs for Borderlands 2 and a 8GB PS Vita memory card. It will retail for $199.99.

The new PS Vita model will launch in Black bundled with Borderlands 2 and a 8GB memory card.

The slimmer, lighter PCH-2000 series model was previously announced at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show. It features an architecture redesign that makes it approximately 20 percent slimmer and 15 percent lighter than the original PS Vita. The new model also features rounded edges that makes the system more ergonomic. The slimmer Vita will come packed with 1GB of internal memory.

The Vita slim also features improved battery life. Battery performance now touts four to six hours of gameplay, up from three to five hours. Video playback will also benefit from the increased battery life going, from the previous five hours of playback to seven. Instead of the original model’s OLED display, the new model will utilize a LCD display to deliver the same vivid and crisp visuals.

Borderlands 2 takes advantage of the system’s unique features by allowing players to manage inventory, inspect items and use maps through use of the front touchscreen and rear touchpad.

Gearbox Software originally developed Borderlands 2 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Iron Galaxy Studios handled the PlayStation Vita port of the game with Sony handling publishing. The PS Vita version includes the game’s six DLC packs – the Psycho and Mechromancer class, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty, Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage, and two item packs in the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 1 and Collector’s Edition Pack.

While the PlayStation Vita has struggled since its launch back in 2012, it has made solid strides by positing itself as the only handheld device for indie developers. The PS Vita library will grow in 2014, with 100 games planned for release. Notable upcoming titles include Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, Murasaki Baby, Hohokum, Helldivers, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Minecraft, Metrico and LUFTRAUSERS.

Quick Take

The PS Vita is a weird system, but it is a fascinating one too. It has struggled since its 2012 launch, going through quite the gauntlet while finding its voice. Surprisingly, that voice was giving an effective handheld platform to indie developers.

It is surprising that is has taken this long for Sony to bring the slimmer, lighter (and cheaper) PCH-2000 series model of the Vita to the U.S. The new weight, size and battery life are compelling reasons to grab the new PS Vita when it hits shelves. It is smart move to bundle the model with Borderlands 2 and a 8GB memory card (1GB means nothing because the system shines through digital releases).
