The Sprite Slam Dunk Contest, Foot Locker Three Point Shootout, and BBVA Rising Stars Challenge will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players who pre-order NBA 2K13. The downloadable content package will feature All-Star Weekend events set in Houston, which is host to NBA All-Star Weekend in 2013, and feature all-new intuitive, easy to use controls.
Gamers will be able to pit today’s NBA superstars against legendary players in the Foot Locker Three Point Shootout and Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. The announcement is a subtle confirmation that classic basketball stars will once again be present in NBA 2K13. 2K Sports has yet to give any information on what capacity the vintage players will be featured in.
Players who use the teams from the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge and NBA All-Star Game will be using the roster as selected in 2012 with a dynamic update that will make the 2013 rosters available once the participants are announced.
According to 2K Sports Vice President of Marketing Jason Argent, the downloadable content package sponsored by Sprite is a way to say thank you to 2K fans that have supported the game over the years.
EA previously held an exclusive rights deal for All-Star Weekend. Past games in the NBA 2K franchise have featured a playable slam dunk contest but it was only as part of the game’s blacktop mode.
A downloadable content package was released for NBA 2K12 to mixed reviews. The “Legends Showcase” DLC was priced at $10 and included games such as H-O-R-S-E and 21. The free pre-order All-Star Weekend content could be replacing that mode.
2K Sports also announced that NBA 2K13 will be available for the Nintendo Wii U. No specific release date for the Wii U version of the game was announced but it will be available “during the holiday season.”
Nintendo has yet to set an exact release date for their new console, only stating that it will launch during the fourth quarter of 2012. It is likely that 2K Sports is trying to protect the release date for the Wii U by not announcing the official date for NBA 2K13. The basketball sim will likely be a launch title for the Wii U.
Developed by Visual Concepts, NBA 2K13 will be released on October 2 in North America and October 5 internationally for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and Windows PC. It appears that 2K Sports will not be making a version of the game specifically for the PlayStation Vita. The company also has yet to announce if they will be producing a follow-up to NBA 2K12 for iOS devices. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB.
Much more information on NBA 2K13 is expected to be announced in the coming months including the cover athlete, which is usually announced during the NBA Finals.
