Mewtwo and new Pokémon

Nintendo gave eager fans a look at a mysterious new Pokémon on Saturday during an airing of Pokémon Smash in Japan.

The new Pokémon look strangely familiar to long time fans as it bears a huge resemblance to the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo.

No name or specific type has been revealed for the new creature. It will appear in the upcoming Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, which is due out in October for the Nintendo 3DS.

The new Pokémon is believed to have a connection with Mewtwo from Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue. Obviously, there is more than a few similarities in their appearances. No information is available about exactly how this new creature and Mewtwo are connected. That will likely come about during the course of Pokémon X and Y when players encounter the new Mewthree (not actual name but that’s what we’ll refer to it as).

If Mewthree and Mewtwo are connected in some fashion, it would be fair to assume that he is a Psychic type Pokémon. The bit of gameplay footage released shows Mewthree using a wide range of moves that trouble classifying its type. In the teaser, it is seen using a wide variety of energy blasts including psychic, ice, grass and various others. Much like the reveal for Sylveon a month ago, the footage only shows Mewthree fighting Pokémon from prior generations.

The new Pokémon marks the sixth new creature shown for the first 3D Pokémon. It joins Sylveon, a new Eeveelution of mysterious type, and the sixth generation starters–the fire-type Fennekin, the water-type Froakie and the grass-type Chespin–as well as the new legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal.

Nintendo and the Pokémon Company have been careful about releasing information on new Pokémon from their highly anticipated Pokémon X and Y, often holding back details to lead to fan speculation. As the October release date gets closer, more information on the story, new creatures and the region should become available.

Stay tuned to Gaming Illustrated for more information about Pokémon X and Y.

The short teaser Nintendo debuted for the new Pokémon can be viewed below.
