Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 – A Portal to Mystery Review: It Was Murder

Minecraft Story Mode was supposed to end with Episode 5 – Order U, but close to its launch, developer Telltale Games announced the final episode would wrap up the story from the first four and lead into an additional three episodes. The first of those three bonus episodes is Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 – A Portal to Mystery.

The latest chapter of Minecraft Story Mode feels very similar to Episode 5, mostly in the self-contained story aspect, but there is enough new elements to make it feel fresh.
On A Night Out…
Jesse and company find themselves in another strange land after having gone through one of the many portals in the recently discovered Hall of Portals. Episode 6 features its own storyline that is neatly wrapped up by the end. The only real mystery remains is what is the Hall of Portals and who created it.
This adventure takes the team to a zombie-infested forest area complete with a creepy castle. A mysterious invitation leads the party to the castle and a murder mystery unfolds. Players are tasked with solving a classic whodunit.
The setup and homage to classic Agatha Christine-like mysteries is nothing short of brilliant. The cast of characters offers up some suspects — players will find themselves questioning their own team at some point.
Luckily, this episode doesn’t end on a cliff-hanger and we get to find out who the culprit as the adventure ends.
Action Meets Mystery
A Portal to Mystery is filled with intense action sequences, including a well-paced one-on-one showdown and a visually impressive zombie invasion. Quick-time events are the bread and butter of the game, but these moments have become far more challenging, especially in this latest episode.
Despite the action, Episode 6 is heavily focused on the plot, as most Telltale games are. The standard Telltale fare is present in Minecraft Story Mode. Dialogue is controlled via the four-button system. As usual, the response choices help clue players into what avenues their decisions will lead down.
Guest Starring: The Real Minecrafters
Several prominent Minecrafters (Minecraftians? Minecrafti?) were allowed the chance to guest star in this episode, which may seem weird but it pans out incredibly well. None of the voice-acting feels forced or unprofessional, and the characters fit in perfectly with the game’s established cast.
The sound department is where this episode really shines. Music choices might be some of the best the series has offered. In addition to the solid voice acting, creepy tunes and tense music fit the murder mystery motif perfectly and provide an amazing atmosphere befitting of the plot.
The murder mystery scenario was the perfect setting for the guest actors. It still allows the game’s plot to shine and the voice acting does not disappoint. If it guest stars were a one-time idea, it goes out with a bang.
Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 6 pulls a lot of punches and shows that the Adventure Pass featuring episodes 6, 7 and 8 isn’t just a gimmick. Episode 6 is well thought out progression of the story’s natural arc as well as a story that stands out on its own.
