The first two episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode have left a lot of unanswered questions and open plot lines. In Episode 3 – The Last Place You Look, the weight of players’ decisions is already beginning to take affect on the overall plot. After a slight dropoff in the second episode, Episode 3 is when the game really starts to come together and the anticipation for a climax begins to mount.

Episode 3 sees the reunion of the Order of the Stone. Without revealing major spoilers, the gang is brought together, but how this occurs is determined by player decisions.
Throughout the episode, the tension between the members of the Order builds, but this will likely be explored in greater capacity in the remaining two episodes. Major choices drive the narrative, and this becomes especially obvious in the third episode as players begin to deal with the consequences of their choices. Each little decision can lead to unexpected results.
In Minecraft: Story Mode, the decisions are not black or white; making decisions doesn’t mean choosing between which characters live and which ones die. There is a lot of depth to these choices, and players are held accountable for their actions almost immediately. But there is plenty of teasing and foreshadowing to future episodes.
Bringing Four Together
Like most Telltale titles, the majority of combat involves QTEs. But there is a notable difference in Minecraft: Story Mode. During quick-time events, players are forced to use directional controls. This gameplay mechanic has players first aim onto specific points before hitting the corresponding action button. It is still a QTE, but the attempt to include more of these advanced QTEs adds variety to otherwise static gameplay.
The Last Place You Look is comprised of a good balance of exploration and combat. Players get a break from QTEs as the plot focuses on some of the game’s other characters.
Episode 3 serves as a great opportunity for the voice acting to shine, and the actors deliver impactful perfomances. While tensions rise and eventually reach a boiling point during the episode, voice acting is solid and honest. The acting talent is especially important in this series due to the moral choices and overall narrative. An engaging story with great voice performances that convey the emotional tones of the game keeps players invested.
Blending the kid-friendly world of Minecraft with the more mature tone of Telltale Games was a seemingly awkward task, but thus far, Minecraft: Story Mode has proved that a game targeted at children can have all the nuisances of its gritty counterparts. Tension starts to build in Episode 3, and it is all the better for it.
