Minecraft: The Story of Mojang, which premiered Saturday and was up for sale on Sunday, has been torrented on The Pirate Bay by the film’s creators 2 Player Productions.
The documentary debuted Saturday via a live stream on Xbox Live. It has been met with rave reviews from the video games media, gamers and critics. Minecraft: The Story of Mojang currently holds a 7.2 rating out of 10 on movie website IMDB.
2 Player Productions is offering various ways to purchase the documentary. A DRM-free digital download of the movie can be purchased for $8 at minecraftmovie.com and a DVD version is available for $20 at famgamer.net.
Minecraft: The Story of Mojang tells the story of Mojang founder Markus “Notch” Persson and his rise to fame through the indie game Minecraft. Mojang is the game studio that developed the massively-popular multiplatform title.
The movie, filmed in 2011, chronicles Notch as he assembles a small team of developers to put the finishing touches on Minecraft, the insane popularity the game gained and how it made Notch a celebrity overnight. The documentary also gives a glimpse inside operations at Mojang after the company was founded.
Minecraft: The Story of Mojang began through a Kickstarter campaign that launched in February last year. The goal for the project was $150,000 and the game went on to raise $210,297.
Details on Minecraft: The Story of Mojang were unveiled in October. The documentary was tentatively set for release on Dec. 7.
Minecraft is still insanely popular. It has received continued support since its release, including a recent update to the Xbox 360 version. Meanwhile, Notch is in the process of creating a new sci-fi title.
